I have a chance to buy a like new Marlin lever action 39AS. The gun was manf in 1988. The seller wants $500 for it. Is this a good deal? Gun only. No box or paperwork. I see these guns sell for this price. Just want to make sure I am not getting the short end of the stick.
It looks to have been fired, but very little.

same here. i'd much prefer the '88 over a new one. i paid a slight premium to get my '57 mountie. i prefer the pre-safety marlins, but if it's in good shape, i'd buy it.

I'd look for an earlier one before the cross bolt safety. Just a nicer rifle in my opinion.

I don't know where you are going to find a new Model 39 for $400 because since the re-release after the Remington buyout the prices I've seen are from $699 to $710 NEW but no lower. If you can get a like new 1988 M39 for $500 I would snatch it up right a way before someone else does.

Even Buds Gun Shop online who always have the best prices had a price of $565 on their 39A the last time they were in stock but the price will surely go up when the new ones come in.

Marlin isn't Marlin anymore ... Cerberus (IIRC) owns them now and they are living off the name ... Buy the real deal & hand it down to your kids when the time comes.

Actually Freedom Group bought Marlin, the same company who owns Remington, Bushmaster, Barnes and a host of others.

Arizonan,

Buy it and don't look back. Without knowing anything on your collection, I can think that the 39A would one that would be in the treasured heirloom category.

Check out the Marlin 39A club thread on this site. You'll see a rolling affirmation on the rifle.

Let us know how this turns out,

It's so hard to keep all the buyouts and sub companies straight these days I just don't know. I could have sworn Freedom Group was no longer part of Cerberus but I could easily be wrong about that... What really matters is, Marlin is not completely gone and neither is Winchester. I also feel it's a good thing Mossberg and Henry are making leverguns just to keep them all trying to improve their products to keep their share of the market.

I hated the fact FN, a foreign company, bought Winchester but that was mitigated by the fact John Browning was a large part of FN too.

"that was mitigated by the fact John Browning was a large part of FN too"

The story is told that when John Browning walked down the street the Belgians stepped aside, then bowed and curtsied to the man who had brought them so much prosperity. They took extreme pride in their work.

Winchester, good. FN, better. :)

Go for it. I have an 39AS I got new about half a decade after that 1988 model was built. The safety version of that Marlin works fine. If you find the trigger is heavy there are ways to improve on that. The 39 sure is a great fast shooter and being able to take it down for cleaning is a plus, too.

BTW, with the AS models you can dry fire it with the safety on and the firing pin never gets whacked.

Got the Marlin for a whole lot less then $500.00
My buddy used it as a stake in a 6 man poker game. Guess who won $1200.00and a nice Marlin 39AS.:what:
That's right me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now it is time for me to move it and get this 1961 Python I have been eyeing down. If you fellow gunners know anyone needing a 1988 mint Marlin 39. Have them get in touch with me!!!!!!! I sure love getting weapons that I don't have to spend a dime on:D

Damn, this is making me feel good!!!!!

I picked up a 39A Mountie for $400 about a year ago and it was a pre 63 or 64.
If I was to grade it, I would put it between 90 and 95%. it came with a scope from that error too.

Well that sure changes everything!

I always thought the Skinner sights looked, handled/balanced, and shot best on the 39.

Is it like new on the outside?? Have a bore light? Is the seller near you so you can try it out? Have local gun smith check it out if possible, if you don't know what to look for?

Mine that is 5 years old, uses Aquila Rifle Match for best accuracy out to 100 meters.

Good luck on your search. It is a fun rifle for all occasions!

Sold 2006 model.

I recently sold my 2006. It had a Nikon Prostaff 3-9X40. It had original box + papers. It was fun while it lasted. Happy someone could make use of it. I am not a collector or hunter.

I had a gorgeous 39A Golden, made in 1958. Then, my grandson (the gun nut) turned 13.
I officially gave it to his dad, of course, for legal reasons. I surely would not have taken $500 (or $700 for that matter) for it.
