I'm changing. I can FEEL it. Going oh so slowly over to wheel-guns and thinking about lever-action rifles. This fine Marlin is chambered for .357 magnum, plus has a 0.75 inch rubber recoil pad on the butt. (Why the pad, you may ask. Separated shoulder says I. A permanent condition that gets worse as I age.)
Anyway, I'd like to know if anybody has this rifle and is happy with it because I can get a good price on a NIB model.

Thanks,
KR

Hurry - Marlin has dropped it for 2003. I see them for $370-390. I have a 1894P; nice gun. I just put a Pachmayr Decelerator on it (bad shoulder as well).

Saw one at a gun show last week priced at $315. Best the dealer would do was $300. I walked away, primarily because I already had one in .44 mag. Have regretted it ever since. :banghead:

I put a standard hard placstic butt pad on mine (swapped with the one from my Marlin 30-30) as it had no kick anyway and shortened it up even more. Fun gun but I sold it at a gun show for a .44mag 'upgrade'

Revolvers and levers are a trend I noticed a few years back, I only have one autopistol now and only one pistol gripped rifle........and I have much more fun shooting than I ever did!

I don't have the 1894CP but do have a "standard" 1894CS. I think they just call it the 1894C now. 18.5 inch barrel, 9 round. It is a terrific liittle carbine and I would not part with it. I liked the CP when I looked at it but mine is just too close to it in size so I never got one.

Kentucky I never intended to buy a 1894CP, but when I held one in the local gun store I just had to have it.
Luckily that impulse buy turned out to be a good decision as my 1894CP is definately my favourite rifle, due to the compact size, weight, dual chambering (.357 and .38spcl) and overall 'fun factor'.

Deadman...

Do you shoot a lot of .38 Specials from your CP? I hadn't considered that aspect. Any adverse effects? Sometimes when you shoot .38 Specials from a .357 revolver, you get a gunk build-up in the front of the cylinder. I wonder if you'd get this same gunk build-up in the firing chamber of the CP? Opinions please??

Thanks,
KR

yes............keep it clean just like a revolver after .38 shooting

the biggest problem with .38 shooting out of a lever gun is the pure boredom

I haven't shot enough .38spcl yet to warrant any extra cleaning, but the more .38spcl I shoot the more attention I'll pay to the chamber to make sure there isn't any adverse build up.

As for the reasons to shoot .38spcl from a 1894CP? Basically the same reasons for using .38spcl in a .357 revolver. Less noise, recoil, 'blast' and the extra versatility. For eg. if the firing range I attend is busy, I'll shoot .38 instead of .357 to reduce the noise from the ports, so as not to distract the other shooters.

As an aside I've had no problems feeding/chambering .38 jhp's or .38 swc's with my 1894CP FWIW.

Guys...

Last night my wife's father gave me a Marlin catalog. The catalog shows a "model 1894P". It's a rifle the same exact size and weight as the .357 mag "1894CP", except it's chambered for .44 mag/.44 special. Maybe that one would be a better choice. What do you think? I LIKE .44 specials..a lot! To me, a .44 special revolver recoils less than a .357 magnum. Thoughts on the matter, please? (Before I go out and buy both and my wife shoots me with one. :D )

It'sd discontinued for 2003 as well, tho still floating around in limited numbers. I like mine, tho I think the rifling twist is a bit slow to stabilize bullets >240 gr.

I have a 94 CS with ballard rifling. A Williams Foolproof receiver sight improved it greatly. I love the gun and would buy another but would never buy a ported piece. I love my hearing even more!
