bought a used winchester 490 yesterday and put the mag in and the first time it slam fired on me. Took it straight back and got a full refund. i am now looking at a brand new marlin model 60, what is the concensus on it? good? accurate? reliable? the store claims it is the worlds most popular .22, any truth to that claim? thanx

I bought a brand new model 60 (SSK I think) that came with a stainless steel barrel and synthetic stock, semi-auto with a 17 round tube magazine. It shoots very nicely with open sights or scope from 50 yards. I don't know how many they sell but you see a bucnh of model 60s around.

I have the Mod 60 that belonged to my Grandfather. It is also the rifle I was taught how to shoot with. It is a GREAT rifle, and 'yes', it probably is the number one selling .22lr.

I bought one several weeks ago for 80 bucks or so, and it seems more accurate than I am. I'm gonna take it to a silhoutte match this weekend to see how it does vs. 2500 dollar guns w/ scopes. :D

I know the ''10/22'' camp is probably bigger than the Marlin 60 one but .... gotta say .... since having mine last three years ..... it never fails to please and impress me. I honestly have lost count of it's ammo consumption!!!

I got it from Wally World .. not much over 100 Bucks ... plopped on a scope and that's the way it's been ever since. Pretty much a tack driver. Now and again crud build up can cause an FTE with full mag .. easy to strip and clean tho.

Final point . the 15 rnd tube mag is for me way better than stg mag .. and allows me to use the loader shown in pic below. Nice'n'quick! :)

My first real rifle was a Marlin Model 60. They are an SOB to clean because there is no guide for the recoil spring and it is tough to get back into the rifle. Luckily mine has been pretty tolerant of not being cleaned, last time I cleaned that rifle was in 1985.

The one I bought has a Tasco scope that came with it that would shift zero if you looked at it askance; but the iron sights and the gun were very solid.

That Speed-D-Loader sure does make the tube loader rifle fun!

I also have a Marlin 60, never realized how popular they are. Main reason I got it was because it was something different from a Ruger 10/22 and quite cheap at Wal-Mart.

Mulliga-

Aren't you describing the M995, not the actual Model 60?

I think I want a M995. Hard to find locally, though. I did have a blue version (M795) a couple of years ago, and wish I hadn't had to sell it to help pay a bill. It shot quite well with iron sights.

Be vewwwy careful about ordering from Sportsman Guide! They've got some decent stuff at good prices, and as long as you read the description carefully I don't think you'll get ripped off.

But you'll NEVER get off their mailing list! And your address will be sold far and wide!

Your choice, of course - just understand the game rules.

Well, 'my' Model 60 is about 25 years old. It is more accurate than my newer 10/22. Has a much better trigger, too, but that may not be the case for the newer ones.

They've been making and selling Model 60s as long as I can remember, and I'm a genuine Geezer-in-Training. They've sold a gazillion of them under several different proprietary labels in the pre-Wally World retailers like Sears, Wards, Western Auto, etc., and even more through the "Big Box" discount stores.

I don't doubt that there're more of them out there than any other self-loading .22 ever. They've always been attractively priced and have a reputation for accuracy and reliability 'way in excess of what their modest cost might imply.

They don't have the massive aftermarket support that the 10/22 has and the Remington 597 seems to be getting, but the fact that you can still get one NIB for $40-70 less than their closest competition and the higher capacity of their tube magazine still make them a favorite for plinking and general "fun stuff" with budget-minded shooters.

Ya gotta love something that seems to give you that much perceived value for the buck.

The model 60 is pretty darn accurate. It's a great rifle for the price...

The only thing I don't like about it is the tube mag, that thing is a pain to load...

Yeah, but with a capacity of 14? 17? rounds, you don't have to load it very often. I think its easier than reloading most .22 box mags.

And did you know they make a speed-reloading tool for 'em? Kind of a "stripper clip" for tubes. I don't have one; just seen 'em before.

Just to reiterate re the tube mag, speedloading etc ..... the 15 round capacity is good .... and i doubt loading takes much longer than a box mag really. if tho you get a Sppee-D-Loader and charge it before the range visit ... you have eight very fast reloads available!!

A small trick with that BTW ...... before you ''pour'' in the rounds .... (with rifle inverted and at about 45º angle) .... release the slide lock so it closes the bolt .... then - all 15 will go in.

Marlin is a very good gun

Yes, there very dependable, tough, and accurate. i have talked to alot of riffle specialists and they have never talked bad about the marlin. the 60 has a nice wood stock and tube load which is good and holds 14 bullets. and the gun is very reliable. the marlin company has been making guns since the 1830's and has always had a good reputation. shoots great, very accurate so go ahead and try it, take a shot.

Firing ranges

this really dose not have anything to do with the great marlin 60 but im trying to find out if anybody here lives in houston, texas and knows were a good rifle range is thanks!

The Marlin 60 is a classic. It is the best bang for your buck in a tube feed .22lr rifle. They are very good guns that are often very accurate and very reliable. They can be found used for $60 and up and they are a deal most of the time.

I had a Model 60 until recently. They are a great little gun and accurate. I never had any problems with mine. Much better than a 10/22 unless you have an uncontrollable urge to tinker continually... if that's the case, go with a 10/22

I would say go for it on the 60
