I really want a marlin model 60ss are they pretty reliable and accurate? What would I expect to pay for one (they have them at my local walmart, but personally I was too busy admiring the gun through the shiny glass case to see the price);)

Hmmm this doesn't seem to be getting much attention... guess i'll post it in general gun discussion instead...

Ahh well now when i post this in general gun discussion, a moderator tells me to post it here!:fire: I don't know if i like this forum or not so far

This is right up my alley :)

My dad taught me to shoot on his Model 60 around fifteen years ago. If I had to guess, I'd say I experienced less than a handful (read: less than 5) FTFs/FTEs over the course of a few thousand shots between age 11 and 18, when I joined the Air Force and moved away, and I never had any complaints about it's accuracy.

I'm 26 now and actually just bought my own .22LR about two weeks ago. I made sure it was a Marlin Model 60. Mine isn't the stainless model, I opted for the blued barrel and synthetic stock (it came with pre-drilled holes for a sling, which I liked), but it shoots just as well as my dad's always did. I love this gun, and I'd recommend it to anyone. If God ever gives me a son, I'm going to use the Model 60 to teach him to shoot.

Please post rifle questions in the rifle forum. Thank you.

how can this polite request offend anybody?

Well it didn't really offend me, and yes it was a very polite request, but all i'm saying is that this forum is alot different than the other gun forums, guess i'll just have to get used to it.

^^^ Yes, this forum is very different from most others. It's far more civil and is moderated in "moderation".:) Welcome, sir... and please stay kewl.

the moderators DO run a really tight ship here, but they are determined to make absolutely sure this forum remains civil and adult.
Very few mall ninjas here and give us a little time, you'll like it.

Between my Son and I we have 3 of them. I also have 10/22's. But for the money and accuracy I really like the model 60's. All of the one's we have are as reliable as it gets. Although there is this one spring that lays over the bolt that can get easily dislodged when breaking it down for cleaning and will mis-lead you to think something broke, or the rifle is just not reliable. Are you having problems with one? if so let me know what it is doing and I'll do my best to stear you straight.

Yes the Marlin Model 60ss is a great rifle. And it is worth the $240-$320 and the cheap ammo. It is like the Ruger 10/22, only Marlin (great brand). [Pros]: Cheap, reliable, larger capacity (than other conventional rifle tubes), and easy to find parts .[Cons]: Bad accuracy, feed ramp gets dirty (a little quick), and it doesn't work well with cheap ammo (only remington golden bullets).

I tried to balance out the Pros and Cons. But even with the Cons, if you want it. Go out and buy it.

I have a Marlin 60SS with the laminated stock... best .22 I have ever owned. (I also owned a Winchester model 94 BSA 22, and I have a Winchester model 67 .22 bolt action) Accurate, reliable, and does good with even cheapie ammo. I put a scope on it, just a $50 bushnell, its on there good and tight.

One word of warning.. do not shoot hyper-velocity ammo like CCI stingers through it. It can supposedly damage a plastic blowback buffer, which will eventually lead to further wear.

Anything else is fine.. mini-mags, Remington gold..etc.

Its a solid, tough, reliable gun, with great accuracy- which is the reason its the best selling .22 autoloader for like the last 60 years.

[Cons]: Bad accuracy, feed ramp gets dirty (a little quick), and it doesn't work well with cheap ammo (only remington golden bullets).

Thats because of the cheap ammo, actually. Shoot CCI or Federal and it will be a lot cleaner, but it seems to like the dirty stuff.. caused me no problems to shoot it dirty for days.

I don't see any .22 as a supper accurate long range gun, but the marlin 60 is probably the most accurate one out there in its class.

As far as the trigger guard goes, a lot of people (including mossberg) have switched to a strong plastic, it is not an issue, unless maybe you plan on your rifle hitting a lot of rocks. There are metal ones at various websites that bolt right on for like $20 anyhow.

BUY IT!

Can you tell me more about this aluminum trigger guard from "DIM?" Who are they? When you say you got both the trigger guard and trigger, did it come already assembled (so you can basically just unscrew the original and pop on the new assembly)?

Looking for something like that for my 795SS.

I have no problems with plastic tg's. I only have a problem with this particular tg. I've been shooting Marlin 60s for almost 45 years. I think I know what they have used in that model for the trigger guard.

I've had no issues with it. What era was yours from?

And where are you finding metal trigger guards for 60's for $20? You can buy plastic trigger guards for that much but not metal. And what does Mossberg have to do with this? About the only rifles around that still use metal tg's are CZ's.

I forgot where it was, I'm sure a simple Google search will turn it up for you. It may have been $30, but I assure you it was a cheap remedy.

Mossberg has relevance, as in a lot of manufacturers have went to plastic tg's as you mentioned.

$40 is the new $20:p

I stand corrected, again. The point that we are both driving home here..its a great rifle, and there are options for it.

You know you can always call your local Walmart and ask how much they wanted for it....

Or call any other big box sports store such as Bass Pro, Cabelas, Academy, etc

Or look online

I have the blued version and it shoots like a champ. I'm sure the SS model will do you right. Welcome to The High Road. Please don't get fussy if someone doesn't respond to your thread right away.

I got mine for $100 with a Winchester 67 also.

hehe.. that was from great-gramps though.

Check out the many online retailers.. JG..Buds.. etc.

If it were me looking for a Model 60....

I'd either go into Academy or Wal-Fart and get a new one and just shoot it. Stressing about the trigger guard and such is nonsense.

Or look in the local pawn shops and gun shops that sell used rifles and buy an older (pre-1980) Model 60. My 1975 Glenfield 60 has a metal trigger guard and 18 round magazine. The previous owner did not treat this well and it's a little beat up. However it still shoots like a new rifle.

You can find a good used 60 for less than $100 if you are patient.

If you are hell-bent on the stainless model go pay all the money and get a new one.

Walmart sells the Marlin 60SB here which is stainless with a wood stock. The Marlin 60SS is slightly different as it has a different laminate stock that's black/gray.

That being said, the 60SB here is $207 and at the Walmart up the road, it has a silver tiny rimfire scope on it and they want $217. It's one of those $7-8 scopes on it.

Used, I've seen them from $115-170.

Dicks also sells the 60SB and they wanted like $260 or something outrageous a few months ago, but last time I was in there I noticed they were on sale for $220 or something around that price.

Also just noticed Buds has one for $191 shipped if you pay with cash, + any FFL fee's. This is the cheapest I've seen a new one. A local FFL here charges $12 for transfers so you could come out cheaper than Walmart, but many others charge $25-35 so if that's the case you may not come out ahead.

Although, that one in the picture has checkered wood and the ones I've seen locally never have. I'm not sure if that one really will when you get it or not.
