Massachusetts non resident firearm laws

Can anyone clarify these laws for me? Im looking to visit a friend in Mass, and I wanted to bring my 10/22 to target shoot. What should I know about the laws when transporting firearms and ammunition to the state? And can I bring them then instead if getting a non resident permit?

mass is pretty simple...

if you dont have a license (FID, LTC-B, LTC-A), resident or non-resident, you cannot legally posses a firearm or ammunition of any kind.

M are you sure about this. Granted it has been a couple years, but MA grants non-resident hunting license, etc. I was under the impression that long guns were ok for authorized use such as at a range, etc.

One thing that has Long been true is that non residents can't buy ammo.

pretty sure, Mass law is pretty specific.

a license is required for purchase and possession of any type of firearm and ammo.

if you are renting guns from a range, or are shooting under the supervision of someone with a license is completely legal....

the only exception i believe is if you are coming solely for a shooting match, and leaving immediately afterwards.

Chapter 140 Section 129 also applies and includes long guns
Section 129C. No person, other than a licensed dealer or one who has been issued a license to carry a pistol or revolver or an exempt person as hereinafter described, shall own or possess any firearm, rifle, shotgun or ammunition unless he has been issued a firearm identification card by the licensing authority pursuant to the provisions of section one hundred and twenty-nine B.

Exemptions:

(f) Possession of rifles and shotguns and ammunition therefor by nonresident hunters with valid nonresident hunting licenses during hunting season;
(g) Possession of rifles and shotguns and ammunition therefor by nonresidents while on a firing or shooting range;
(h) Possession of rifles and shotguns and ammunition therefor by nonresidents traveling in or through the commonwealth, providing that any rifles or shotguns are unloaded and enclosed in a case;
(i) Possession of rifles and shotguns by nonresidents while at a firearm showing or display organized by a regularly existing gun collectors’ club or association;
(p) Carrying or possession by residents or nonresidents of so-called black powder rifles, shotguns, and ammunition therefor as described in such paragraphs (A) and (B) of the third paragraph of section 121, and the carrying or possession of conventional rifles, shotguns, and ammunition therefor by nonresidents who meet the requirements for such carrying or possession in the state in which they reside.

As far as web info here is a pretty plainly stated summary, I'm assuming that a 10-22 is exempt as a rim fire long gun.

Looks like you may need to be cautious if your 10-22 has any tacticool pistol grip etc.

Also I read the quoted text above as exactly the non-resident exemptions.

the sequence requires you to come to Ma for an interveiw at the Public Safety office in Chelsea. Where are you coming from? if coming by auto have your freind meet you at the border and drive the rest of the way to his home. Otherwise leave your firearms home the penalties here for firearms possesion w/o a permit are quite severe.

I wont bother getting a temporary permit.. Thanks for the quick replies guys.
