To any of you website programmers out there, here is an interesting idea. Build a website database whereby people can catalog their rifle serial numbers in the hopes to find a complete rifle. Here's why I bring it up. I have a 1938 MN 91/30 from Tula Arsenal. All rifle serial numbers match (bolt, barrel, butt plate and magazine cover). However, my bayonet is not the original, )ie. different serial number). I figure it has to be out there somewhere but there is no common site to list it.

By the way, the serial number I'm looking for is 1295

my understanding is bayonets were not numbered to the rifle nor issued in any order. so in reality your rifle kit would be LESS authentic if you had the right # bayonet.

also even if you COULD do this. the fact is theres atleast a 75% chance the part #'s you need are buried under an apartment building in berlin, or some field outside stalingrad.

Gunboards.com has a serial number registry, but it's only for some rarer Mosins IIRC. I've always thought it'd be cool too, but there were just way too many Mosins made (and lost) for it to be practical.

Thats possible about my bayonet, but what about other people out there that have a mismatched bolt or magazine plate?

well i dont know the extent of mismatches from importers, or "garage" builds. but why would random parts be used to begin with unless the originals were damaged. meaning some got 2 rifles. one with a broken stock, one with a bad barrel. it then becomes a new rifle.

i donno. i just get the feeling that if its missmatched, its that way cause original parts were otherwise unuseable

That is a great idea. I heard of a similar thing for K31 owners and bayonets over on the Swiss gunboards.

For what it's worth, I have a K31 with a non-matching magazine, and would love to find the original... :)

Still, some people are going to be VERY resistant to the idea of having this information "out there."

Yeah, I suppose you're right. The negative become there would now be a database for the "EVIL" guns owners of the country with their "EVIL" military rifles, ect.ect.ect.

hoppy 590, actually ALL of the 91/30 bayos were very carefully kept with each rifle, they are hand fitted to each particular rifle and its very common to have the same ## match at least the reciever..

As far as other mis-matched parts, lets use the Yugo mausers as an example, in this case it is very un-common to have a matched bayo simply because of the way these rifles were sold, the importers bought say 5,000 rifles then say 8,000 accesary kits, these kits were assembled by the staff at the Armory were the rifles were stored, importers do not go to the trouble of trying to match up the kits to the correct rifle hence the bayos get all mismatched, now I do have an extremally rare example being a 24/47 in mint condition serial number 0033 no prefix it is literally the 33rd rifle built in 1924 furthermore it still retains ALL of its original components total matching had never been fired AND it had its serial matched bayo........... what makes it so rare? aside from whats been listed so far it also was hand picked by ME before it was imported, I boxed it and numbered the crate when it arrived with the first shipment it was put aside for me, I had duct taped the bayo to the rifle to ensure it would not be lost....

I watched as all of the 24/47s and m48s for that shipment were crated, accesaries in seperate crates etc... well when they got stateside a dealer orders 10 rifles and 10 accesary kits, they just grab them outa each crate from the top no attempt to match anything even though the correct kits were in those accesary crate to match those rifles............

Many bayos are lost on the battle field or stolen by soldiers or sold etc... in that case a replacement is renumbered when the rifle is re-arsenaled but in the case of 91/30S loseing your bayo was grounds for immediate punishment,

maybe thats what i had heard. that the importer didnt keep track of bayo's. darn, sorry for the bad info. some times you convince yourself you heard what you thought.

but personaly i dont care if my bayo is missmatched (which it is). and if my rifle was missmatched i doubt i would put my info on the web unless i had something of a collectors piece
