Matt's gun and belt were on display last summer in the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, WY...we saw it t here along with Paladin's gun & holster as well as many others. A search will turn up a pic of the display. Rod

Sounds wonderful.

But in a way it's also quite sad. For
many the reel depictions become the
image of the real "Old West."

In a way, Glenn Ford's "The Violent Men"
remains one of my favorites because in it
he never gives the bad guys a chance,
let lone an even chance, in the confrontations.

Reminds me of early shows with Matt Dillon.
In one he figures out a gun man isn't all that
accurate so he makes sure he stays a ways
away to kill him. In another he and Chester
wait for a gang with rifles and then proceed
to ambush them without warning.

Soon the TV censors yelled, "Stop that!"

In The Shootist John Wayne insisted a scene where he shot an adversary in the back be changed. He said in all his movies he had never shot anyone in the back.
John Selman killed John Wesley Hardin on August 19, 1895. He insisted he acted in self defense and shot Hardin from the front. The coroner who examined Hardin said:
"If he was shot from the front it was good shooting. If he was shot from behind it was good judgement."
