I have M98 I have just rebarreled to a .308 and the cartridges are not feading up into the bolt for the controlled fead all the way like they should. Which results in a sticky fead into the chamber. Anyone with suggestions on how get rid of the problem ....... thank you.

I can't tell without seeing the gun, but you might need to work on the feed lips in the bottom of the receiver rails. First study the problem then, if you decide that is the problem, use a small grinder to slowly and carefully alter the rails. But first make sure the magazine spring is good and the follower is coming up properly. Once you do work on the receiver rails, it will be very hard to undo it.

Will it feed if the cartridges are pushed all the way foreword in the magazine box?

You might need to add a spacer block in the rear of the mag to hold the shorter cartridges to the front.

The .308 is .43" shorter OAL then the 8mm Mauser.

I would study the mechanics of the problem a long time before I removed any metal. It is amazing how radical of a change you can get with a single stroke of a fine hand file, let alone power tools.

If feeding is sticky but the cartridges basically do in fact feed, and if you have already cleaned any dried grease or whatever out of the action, then I might try a light polish with a stone or at most 320 grit sandpaper backed with a block. I would use power tools for opening the rails for belted magnums, not for fine tuning sticky feeding.

A few years ago a mot so happy owner of a Remington type rifles was hollering, seems he could find ‘only’ two rings of steel that surrounded the case head, and I was hollering “Look in your hand” “It is in your hand” etc, he did not understand my response and he did not ask me what I meant by suggesting he look in his hand for the other ring, the one he could not find. Anyhow, the ring he could not find was on the end of the bolt, the bolt was in his hand.

I have 308 W cases, I will never run out of 308 W cases, I also form 308 W cases from 30/06 cases, I form 8mm57 cases from 30/06 cases, Point? I have never had a problem with a formed case feeding in a Mauser 98 type rifle/action. Also, because of the large/generous necks of the 7.62 NATO chamber I do not use 308 W cases, I have found .012” difference between the chamber neck dimension and the neck diameter of a loaded case when using 308 W brass.

It is possible the problem with your Mauser feeding is caused by the extractor groove of the 308 W cases you are using.

I would attempt to chamber 30/06 cases and or 8mm57 cases, as you know you do not expect the cases to chamber and allow the bolt to close, we all know we are trying to determine if the cases will control feed.

And, I would not attempt testing control feed without bullets in the cases, the extra weight could pull the case ‘down in front’,
