I have 3 mauser actions and I want to make one a short action (for .243).

I want to make this a project and would like a little advice before starting.
Dimensions if anyone have them would be outstanding.

Thanks in advance any help appreciated

Be more specific. What actions do you have and do you think you want to cut and shorten the action ? The 8mm mauser military is shorter than a 30-06 length but longer than a 243 length.

Barring the new Winchester Short Magnums, the .243 is the most difficult round to get to feed properly in a Mauser action due to the steep shoulder angle. I'm not saying impossible, but definitely difficult...

What do you think about the 6mm Remington???

DeBee may very well be right about the 243 ... it was certainly the hardest caliber that I have done to get to feed well (out of the 243, 308, 22-250, 300WinMag). That being said, I wouldn't trade my .243 (that I built on a Turkish action (didn't cut it down) with a Rem700 takeoff barrel) for anything ... it's a tack driver and is VERY pleasant to shoot. The 6mm might be an easier option, I didn't even consider it ... and you could probably even make it on a 243 takeoff barrel. The 6mm usually gives an additional 50 or 100 fps over the .243 ... but the ammo might be a tad harder to find on a shelf if you needed some.

If you are asking about cutting the action down, I'd have to ask WHY? You can make the 243 work fine on the standard length action and if you cut the action, then, unless I'm missing something obvious, you have to cut the bolt down and re-heat treat the whole mess after you weld it back together ... if you don't heat treat, then it seems that you would be writing off the third lug ... which is really what makes this action so much safer than most ... the third lug handles the worst case scenario of catching a rearward travelling bolt much more gracefully than your forehead would  If you want to save three ounces, then I'd go after some of the wood or plastic on the stock ... if you want to have a faster follow-up shot, then I'd make that 243 on a Garand action ;)

Good luck ... these Mausers can be a TON of fun!

What I have is large ring mausers.
I knew I could count on some experience among you - you have enlightened me.

That's why I find these forums so useful - Thanks a lot

More comments appreciated

Well ... if you have Large-rings, then you are pretty much stuck with buying barrels made for Mausers as it seems that they have some of the largest threads out there. Many sources with many choices, you just have to define your budget and/or your expectations ;) If any of them were the M48's then they will (as you might already know) be a little shorter and would therefore be the correct choice for your "short-action" rifle.

The Kuhnhausen book (Mausers - A Shop Manual) contains information on shortening a Mauser action. I agree that the 6mm Remington would be a much easier conversion. It is based on the 7x57 Mauser cartridge, and it will feed through a large ring Mauser without modification.

With a large ring 98, you could go with 7x57, hot load it, and it will do everything a .243 will do and a lot more. And no receiver alterations at all.
