From parts to hunting rifle.....
I bought the drilled and tapped action from a fellow THR member last week, $20.00 Weaver scope from Ebay, $16.00 Leupold rings from WalMart, $28.00 Steyr M1912 stock from Ebay.
I decided I'm going for the Kar98b "sniper" look, and remember this is a cheap "hunting rifle" not something warrenting $800 worth of ZF41 scope stuff. Nor am I cutting this stock, no worries. The only other modification that will follow will be to fill in the swivel base in the bottom of the stock, as would be correct for a Gew98 rework in the 20s or 30s.
The stock before mods, as I received it from the Eaby seller....
Here's after the Kar98b sling and bolt relief cuts, after repairing the rasped handle notch. Old cosmoline is great to have on hand to rub into freshly cut old wood, IMO it's the best way to blend the finish w/o refinishing everything. I still need K98 sights and bands and a Gew98 upper handguard. That's a loosely threaded on K98 bbl for looks (and help inletting for the K98 rear sight.
My bolt relief cut and repair (wood from a Turk M1903 broken stock):
The sling well cut(aren't Dremels great?):
