I ordered a Yugo Model 48 from SOG. I recieved a Mod 98. What do I have?
Thanks

SOG told me that they bought a shipment of M48's and have been selling them without any problems. They are down to the last 40 or so and they are now getting calls from people with the same question. WHat is a "Mod 98"? Mine has what looks like a German proof on the leaf spring of the sign. The wood is in good shape with numerous numbers and a triangle on the stock. The reciever and bbarrel are in very good condition with about 50% of the bluing. The bolt looks a little rougher with discoloring (brownish). The capture screws are missing. It has a cleaning rod and nothing else. I paid $112 OTD. So is it worth more then that? I have already ordered a M48 from wholesale guns. I'll keep the "Mod (*" If it is valuable, but if I paid what it is worth I am sending it back. Alsdo the butt plate is much smaller then what is on the M48. It only covers the end of the stock and is about a 1/4 in thick.

Looks much as a V-24, but the parts are not interchangeable.

Mine was built by Bruno which evolved into what is now CZ.

I paid $200 for one in new condition from a local gun shop. I've shot maybe 50rds of turkish remanufactured ammo. It's a joy to shoot, and seems to hold pot pie groups at 50 yds with stock iron sights ( have to aim low
'cause of the stock sights). Went back for another one, but they were out. Mitchell's sells the exact same rifle for $300 (new).

I'm extremely happy with mine, and am going to install the sako scope kit from mitchell's which replaces the rear sight with no machining. Long eye relief, low power, and seems to be very well made (it's on the bench awaiting a free moment).

Enjoy! :D

i have one too... from what i can tell it's a 98k, in a yugo stock, with the 98k handguard....

bottom line is it looks damn good inside and out...

be a few days on pics, it's still in a couple of piles....

Yugos captured a bunch of German equipment in WWII, including the rifles and the equipment to make the rifles. The M48's are made with the original equipmen to make K98's (or something along those lines). The Yugos tok the captured rifles and cleaned them up, and made M48's out of them. Probably similiarto what the Finns did to Russian Mosins.

Basically, you have a German K98 rearsenaled by the Yugos into an M48. The few I've seen are very good looking, and I've been considering one.

i'd have to disagree on some of those details jefnvk.

yes, the yugos captured lots of k98s. they wiped the nazi proof marks and stampings off them, and put their prudenzce (sp?) stamp on it. they stenciled on the reciever 'Mod 98" or "m98".
technically, its a k98, but without all the valuable markings. thats exactly what my 'mod 98' is, bought from cdnn.

the yugos went ahead and started manufacturing brand new mausers, but there was some distinct cosmetic differences. one of them is the overall length, as well as barrel length i believe. second, the handguards cover the top of the barrel a lot more. third, yugos (model m48 and m48a) have rear sights that are zeroed for 200 meters, while the m98/mod 98/k98 are zeroed at 100 meters.

kbsrn, if you arent happy with your mod 98 after you've got it cleaned up, let me know. i'll gladly take it off your hands, (after i see some pics of it of course :D ).

both the mod 98 and the yugo m48/m48a are excellent rifles. the m48 will probably be in better condition once its cleaned, considering the yugoslavians never had to use them in battle.

the yugo m48 has little collector value since there are so many of them, but if the price for a m48 is $112, you're doing good. lots of other places have them for around $200 and higher.
