I've got a Yugo Mauser, but am unsure of the model. I thought a few of the surplus rifle crew might be able to help me.

The rifle doesn't have a Yugo crest on the top of the action although it looks like something may have been filed off. I think I can make out a star, but I'm not 100% sure on that.
On the side of the action, it bears the Preduzce 44 stamping and further back on the action (to the left of the bolt) it has Mod.98 stamped on it.
There are a few numbers on various points of the action, but nothing that seems conclusive.
The number 42 is stamped on the bolt release and the number 417 is stamped on the right side of the reciever. This rifle also has a stamped floorplate.

I'm guessing that this is a Yugo M98, but I just wanted to be sure. I don't have my digicam right now, so pictures are not an option.

The Yugoslavs rearsenaled a fair number of K98's that they got from the Germans. That sounds like what you have. It was typical for them to stamp their crest on top of the receiver after grinding off the German markings. This is not an intermediate action like the 24/47's or the model 48's and 48a's. It is a full-length large ring model 98.

The ones that I have seen have been functional but ugly as a mud fence. The overstamping is crude.

I'd probably measure the distance between the triggerguard screws before making that determination.

Not trying to be argumentative, but I was of the impression that the captured K98's that were rearsenaled were called M98/48N's, per the attached blurb from surplusrifle.com:

The M48BO versions were new manufactured M48s as well as numerous captured, reconditioned and "scrubbed" German Kar 98k rifles (sometimes the latter were called M98/48N, the "N" standing for "Njemac," which is Serbo-Croat for "German.") The M48B/M48BO versions were made chiefly for export--and most of these were sent to Egypt, Iran and Algeria. (contributed by Michael E. Kreca)

If this is true, all Preduzece 44 made (or re-arsenaled) Mausers are called M48's - it's just a question of which version number follows. And as far as I know, the easiest *sure* way to tell which M48 version you have (as opposed to guessing from receiver markings) is to measure the action.

Just thinking out loud....

I'm leaning towards a model M-98 as referenced here. http://www.marstar.ca/Y-M-98.htm

The markings match this rifle the closest. I believe there was a Yugo crest, but my supiscion is that it was filed off by someone. The Mod.98 stamping gives it away...I think.

It ain't for sale...sorry. :)

the m48 and m48a (as far as i know anyways, and i could very well be wrong) were both newly manufactured mausers made post-WWII.

k98's that went through that same prud-44 factory became m98's. they have "M98" or "Mod98" etched into the reciever. they dont have hardly any german markings anymore, but typically have the yugo crest.

i havent heard of the m48n or bo, but thats probably cause i havent done much research on the different mauser types for about a year now.
i suppose i should, since i'm a bit interested in the mausers coming out of the russian arsenals that still have their proofmarks.

Sounds like a K98 to me. M48s do not have a "mod. 98" stamped on the receiver rail- that's a german thing.

Some people confuse M48s and K98's altogether, but they are two distinctly different beasts.

The easiest way to tell other than the length of the handguard is to look inside the action: a M48 will have a groove cut in the breechface for the extractor to fit in.

To add-

Some of the Yugo refurbished M98's do have the original german markings along with a yugo crest stamped on the receiver- I saw racks of these at a gunshow a few years ago.

Sorry to drag this up, but where would one source a stock for this rifle? The rifle has an aftermarket stock on it.

Oh, thanks for your help.
