I have always wanted several guns in different calibers. I've looked at H&R/NEF, Rossi, even Thompson Center but they are either low quality or high priced. Resently I have seen some cheap Mauser rifles and I know they make barrels in different calibers. I know that some companies just sell actions for building rifles.

How hard would it be to build a Mauser? I'm more concerned with headspace and insuring that the action is worthy of building a rifle. How do you headspace a Mauser? The answer doesn't need to go into great detail, I just need the gist for now.

I know that I would have to purchase several tools, such as a barrel vise and a receiver wrench.

Would it be more econemical to build a Mauser, not including the cost of tools or time, over buying a Rossi or H&R/NEF? Does anyone know of a good place to buy cheap Mausers for the action and stock?

Thanks

I beleive it's basicly a matter of screwing in the short chambered barrel and finish reaming the chamber until the action closes on a 'go' gauge.

It almost certainly would not be cheaper to build up a mauser, but it's kind of an apples and orangutans comparison on the final results.

Sarco has some pretty decent deals on surplus mauser actions. Sources for other parts include the usual suspects: Brownells, Midway, Numrich, etc.

Here's my current work in progress. It's a mystery origin 98 action chambered for 6mm Remington, with a Boyds pepper laminate thumbhole stock, Buehler scope mount, and Dakota bolt handle.
