I have an k98 mauser and for reasons I won't get into the only optic available to me is a burris handgun scope 2x20.
It seems to me like this would work for a scout scope because the eye relief is right 10-24in. putting it where my S&K mount would be. I hear burris is a good brand.

Can one of you scout guys tell me if this is a bad idea or not? Has anyone got a handgun scope mounted in a similar configuration that works well? And is it any worse than buying a proper scout scope?

It will work on the mauser. The distance to the front site on the mauser is were the scope base is so no problems but there are now a days more than a few choices out there. Just search pistol scopes.

One of the young guys up here got scope base that fits where the rear sight was on one of those a 90 dollar russian bolt rifles. Then put a simmons pistol scope on it and it works.

Burris scopes are a decent scope, and using a S&K mount should work fairly well. The cheaper chinese scout mounts available, are usually a waste of time and will not hold zero well.

The other issue often is the height of the line of sight through the scope will require an add on cheek piece with your military stock.
As you're likely aware, using a scout mount allows you to return your rifle to original condition with no alterations.

I have a model 48 also and recently installed the S&K mounts and thought about a handgun scope but am now going to get the Burris scout scope.

I considered the Leupold first but then saw that the Burris has an adjustable eyepiece while the Leupold doesn't. You might want to make sure the pistol scope you're thinking about has it also. Then again you may have better eyes than I have and it may not matter.

I put a 6-24x40 BSA scope.go to S@K scope mounts.the scope sit's a little to high to have it Bore sighted at the local shop so I brought a Bushnell lazer Bore sighter. There is a screw that I had to basically max out in the up position"it screw's down onto the reciever cover"But it sure beat's Those pistol scope's.

I have S&K scout mounts on my M/N and 98K both sport Bushnell XLT 2-6 pistol scopes. The S&K mounts are rock solid after ~1000 rounds through the Mauser and 500 though the M/N. Your Burris should work just fine on an S&K mount. One thing you will need is something like this http://www.blackhawk.com/product/Ammo-Cheek-Pad,191,1406.htm in order to achieve a proper cheek weld.

If you still have not purchased your S&K mount, check out this guy. GREAT customer service and prices http://kinneysshootingsupply.com/scope-mountsrails-mounts-c-18_72.html
