Maverick 88 barrel

I'm pretty set on getting a maverick 88 (for price reasons and accessory options). The problem I'm having is that nobody in my area sells them, except for a mega-corp that refuses to sell any "combat or defense" related items so I can't get the shorter barrels. What do you guys think about me picking up the Field model of the 88 and selling the 28" accu choke barrel unused, and then buying a shorter barrel myself?

Also, any idea on what the 28" vent-rib accu choke barrel might be worth unused?

Keep the 28 incher. Never know when it might come in handy. Besides, short barrels aren't nearly as useful as one would think.

Unless. Of course. You're trying to cobble together a "combat" or "entry" shotgun.
In which case... yeah, nevermind, I'll shut up now.

If that 28" barrel was from a 7 shot I would have bought it from you, but since the mega corg does not sell defense equipment...I'm guessing not

I have a 28" mossberg 9200 for shooting clays, so iguess you could say that I am trying to "coble together" a HD 12ga.

If you have an ffl in your area you could alway buy online. It may be hard to get the same price after shipping and ffl transfer but you never know and buy what you want the first time.

As others have said, keep the longer barrel. It could be more useful down the road than the "few bucks" you could get for it.

Watch your local pawn shops for a Maverick 88. They show up all the time. I found one in a local pawn shop for cheap. Added a Mossberg 18.5" barrel.

Got right around $200 in it. And the long barrel came with three chokes.

The Field model at wallyworld is only $177 new, whereas ordering the Security model through a FFL will be $250+ (already called around to price it out). And the only pawn shop in town wants $200 for a used one. Also, since I already have a long barrel shotgun I'd much rather sell the 28" barrel from the Maverick and get a 18.5" or 20", unless there is a good reason to have a long barrel on a HD gun.

The other factor is keeping the wife happy.

I bought a cosmeticly rough but funtional moss 500a with a rifled slug barrel on gunbroker two weeks ago for $125. shipping was $25, ffl $15. The rifled slug barrels alone go for close to that much new. I'm just saying the deals are out there you just have to find them, like i said you can always cut a barrel down if you want.

Ya Walmart here has the Maverick field model for $180ish as somebody said. I paid $229 for my 18.5 security.

An update about finding an 88. Apparently walmary emplyees say they can't sell the Security model, but it's in their computer system so they will special order it. Only $197 for the 20"

Another update about getting a HD weapon. The one store in town that sells Maverick 88's refuses to sell the security model even though it's in their computer system. So I looked into picking up a Mossberg 500 28/18.5" combo ($270). Then I called Mossberg and explained that the only dealer in town won't sell the 18.5" barrel, so could I just trade the 28" for the 18.5", and the rep said absolutely! All you have to do is mail in the barrel that came with the Maverick and they will mail a new (different) barrel back.

Mossberg customer service seems pretty impressive so far!
