Using the data from the nossler website I loaded 8.5 grains of power pistol under a 185 grain custom competition in 45 acp. Listed oal is 1.20. My max load from the lyman manual is 8.3 with a longer 1.225 oal. The lyman was an unclassified bullet while nossler is obviously using their bullet. So is it a max or +p load.

Each company uses different stuff to test their loads. Even from firearm to firearm the loads will be different. The manuals are an attempt to give you a safe range of loads that were safe in THEIR firearm or universal receiver when they tested with their exact components. It is always recommended to get several sources of data and interpolate from that. Or call/email the propellant manufacturer with your component choices and ask for safe data. They will always help you out. Indicate if you need +P data. I always get the data from the propellant manufacturer and use that above using general data. Solid or specialty bullets use data from them. The OAL and data of a jacketed or a HP will be different as well as they end up with different internal volumes due to bullet length. Pay attention to minimum length with handgun rounds because of case volumes and MAX length with rifle rounds (for magazine/action fit). Hope this helps

Yeah I was surprised that the charge was higher and the oal shorter. They shot very lively in my kimber. I will test the 50 I made but plan to load 8.0 at 1.225 as they seem more accurate and the gun cycles just fine at the longer oal.

No need to go to +p loads. If you chose the right powder you can get more velocity and less pressure staying with std pressure data.
I was not intending to load +p but the data tabs on the site are identical. This lead to my question. Most of the time I only test to max and settle on the most accurate, normally not max.
