Mayor Daley Threatens to Shoot the Messenger—Namely, Me

Mayor Daley Threatens to Shoot the Messenger—Namely, Me

Posted by Mick Dumke on Thu, May 20, 2010 at 4:32 PM

Mayor Daley loves to bag on the local media, and given my recent line of inquiry into his politics and policies, I’ve never expected to be greeted with a fruit basket at City Hall.
But even I was a bit taken aback this morning when the mayor grabbed a rifle and threatened to shoot me.

The mayor was holding a press conference to discuss what the city was doing to prepare for the Supreme Court’s expected decision to overturn the city’s gun ban. The short answer: all sorts of things, but we’ll just have to wait until the court weighs in next month to find out the details. “We’re hoping for the best,” Daley said.

Guns are one of the mayor’s favorite soapbox topics—he regularly goes out of his way to point out that he despises gun manufacturers and “extremists” like the NRA. “It’s really amazing how powerful they are,” he said today, standing next to a table covered with handguns, rifles, and even a machine gun that police had seized. “They’re bigger than the oil industry, bigger than the gas industry, bigger than Google, bigger than President Obama and the rest of them."

Daley also likes to highlight what he considers to be flagrant hypocrisy on the part of the defenders of gun rights. “Now you can’t walk into the Supreme Court—you have to walk in the side way. They’re going to barricade the doors or something now. I mean, they’re barricading the doors but they’re saying everyone else should have guns. That’s the thing that bothers me in Washington. As you know in Washington all things are being barricaded, all federal buildings. But they’re saying everybody else should be able to carry guns.”

But even supporters of tough gun regulations—myself included—have to admit that it's not clear how much they reduce violence. Despite having some of the most restrictive laws in the country, Chicago is a national leader in shootings and murders, and the mayor himself noted that “we’ve seen far too many instances in the last few weeks” of firearm violence, including the shooting that left a cop dead last night.

So I asked: since guns are readily available in Chicago even with a ban in place, do you really think it’s been effective?

I’m hardly the only guy who asks the mayor things he doesn’t want to answer, and I’ve been responsible for at least one of his huffing, puffing, ranting tangents, which generally get the press corps laughing, thus enabling him to move on to the next question without giving a real answer to the one at hand.

But even by those standards, this was a masterful and surreal performance.

“Oh!” Daley said. “It’s been very effective!”

He grabbed a rifle, held it up, and looked right at me. He was chuckling but there was no smile.

“If I put this up your—ha!—your butt—ha ha!—you’ll find out how effective this is!”

For a moment the room was very, very quiet. I took a good look at the weapon. It had a long bayonet. (Was it seized during the Civil War?)

“If I put a round up your—ha ha!”

The photographers snapped away. Suddenly everybody started cracking up.

Daley went on. “This gun saved many lives—it could save your life,” he said—meaning, I think, that getting that gun off the street might have saved many lives, including mine.

And he went on some more. “We save all these guns that the police department seizes, you know how many lives we’ve saved? You don’t realize it. First of all, they’re taking these guns out of someone’s hands. They save their own life and they save someone else’s. You cannot count how many times this gun can be used. Thirty, forty times in shooting people and discharging a weapon. I think it’s very important.

“Next will be hand grenades, right? We’ll say that hand grenades are OK. I mean, how far can you go in regards to mass weapons? To me, any gun taken off saves thousands of lives in America. I really believe that, I don’t care what people tell me. You have to thank the police officers for seizing all these weapons. We lead the country in seizing weapons. This is unbelievable.”

I had to agree.

Wow! This guy is a clown!

Saves lives huh? I guess I wasn't aware that every gun in the world is used to take thousands of lives. With 300+ million guns in America, I am surprised we didn't go extinct with those "statistics". I wonder how many lives were risked/lost due to peoples inability to defend themselves. Daley... what a stroke.

Yeah, Daley , Chicago leads the nation in gun seizures, it's also starting to look like Juarez.

Well, that explains why he is so adamant about gun control. What is left unexplained is how he could possible believe that to be the case. One would be very hard pressed to find any gun that has in any way led to the loss of thousands of lives in America. I would posit that any rare exception that may exist is probably not a gun in the hands of a civilian. I wish the reporter would have lobbed some follow up questions on that one.

He acts like a mobster because that's what he is. The Chicago government is his mob. And like Capone he doesn't hesitate to threaten lives or take them to enforce his control of the city.

I think Che Guevara's favorite pistol was used in at least a couple dozen murders, maybe as many as a hundred or more. Of course, that's while he was in the newly established Cuban police under Castro.

Strangely, there's many airheads in modern society who glorify the Heinrich Himmler of Cuba. Well, actually I'm not sure if he should be called the Heinrich Müller, Reinhard Heydrich, or Heinrich Himmler of Cuba. I guess I'll just have to go with what the Cubans called him: the butcher of La Cabaña.

I have to wonder if some of the voters that continue to re-elect that idiot Daley, don't do so just for the entertainment value. Myself, I don't think it is funny, but there are some Chicagoans who seem to enjoy the political clown stunts.

Don't forget that in Chicago, dead people also vote. They may have been conservative while alive, but they're not now.
It's too bad Chicago can't be it's own state and leave the rest of Illinois to govern itself.

Does anyone know where photos of this event can be found? I'd like to add it to my anti-gun scrapbook. Google didn't turn up anything.

Edited to add: Oops, I just now read those last few posts.

In IL, is a crime to point a gun at someone with out cause?
He apparently didn't point it at the guy, just held it and made the remarks. If I were the reporter, I'd pursue legal action. If the reporter had the gun and made those remarks, we'd have an entirely different news article to read, about how some guy threatened Mayor Daley. As the posted signs in airports say - there are some things you just don't joke about.

Even worse for Daley was how an offduty Chicago police officer was murdered shortly before this press conference "joke" after just coming off of 2 tours in Iraq (read my above post to the video - story is below the video). He was killed in the front yard of his Dad's house, in front of his Dad, because some thugs were messing with his motorcycle he'd bought for himself after serving our country proudly. His Dad, a retired Chicago cop, pulled his concealed weapon (retired police officers can legally concealed carry in Illinois) and managed to kill of the assailants.

The Chicago gun bans are doing nothing to protect it's citizens.

Also, I'd like to know if Mayor Daley has a FOID card issued to him by the Illinois State Police. If not, he himself had no right to touch a firearm without submitting himself to a background check and paying the state some cash...laws are laws. They're for the safety of ALL of us Illinoisians, right??

Funny how Daley proved himself to be the exact kind of person who should NEVER own or possess a gun - they get provoked or irritated, then grab their gun to threaten or intimidate someone with it. For someone making guns to be so evil, and having a horribly crime-ridden and murder-ridden year in Chicago, he readily grabs one and jokes around with it, about stabbing and shooting someone with it? What type of person does that??

Let me make it real simple so that there can be no misinterpretation of how things actually play out...

Drug dealers and others of that ilk don't kill politicians. Especially not politicians that are good for business.

In history, the only real deal with crime and politics is criminals trying to gain political power. Sometimes there may have been fights over that issue, but on average it is not the criminals that will stand up to corruption.

As history shows, it is us that stands up to corruption, and it is us that Mayor Daley wants to disarm, because we WILL stand up to corruption.

It only makes sense that Daley is disarming the people who threaten his power.

We really don't like criminals though, and most of us believe that criminals should not own firearms, so in a true criminal manner the Mayor can say one thing and mean another.

Kind of like when politicians use little kids to protest for Safe Schools.

Most sheep probably think that is about bullying and violence on campus, but it actually has little to do with safety at all.

I'm sick & tired of this guy. He won't even consider making less-harsh gun laws to see if the shootings really go down. I've seen statistics in other cities, that with less gun control, the less crime.

I think hes a hippocrite because his armed security have guns to protect him. HIS police force uses guns to STOP crime.
I hate Chicago, its an unbelievable mess.

Every time he opens his mouth he strengthens the perception that he's mentally impaired in some way. I wouldn't rule out Alzhemer's.

Has anyone gotten close enough to him to see if he's got liquor on his breath?

How dare you??? Mr Daley is a government employee of the executive branch. He's only responsible for enforcing the law, he has duty none to obey it! Think comrade!!! Think!!!

What is it with the scumbag politicians from chicago ? Not one of them seems to be worth the powder it would take to blow themselves to hell . This dipstick is so arrogant that it seems a waste of time to discuss his stupidity . Every one of these fools from this area seem to revel in their ability to do and say things that any normal person would consider asinine.
