I just ordered a Savage 10FP .308 with the standard basic stock. I'd like to get a McMillan A-5 black stock for it. The only place I could find to order one on-line was from www.mcmfamily.com. Is that the best place to order from or would I be better off going through a local shop?

Has anyone else done this same thing? Do you have any advice?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Order directly from McMillan, and then wait 6 months. I have one on my Savage, very comfortable.

Also, how difficult is it to swap the stocks? Is it something I can do fairly easily or should I get a "pro" to do it?

I have the McMillan A-5 stock for my savage with the thumb wheel cheek rest with the flush mount cups with the quick release swivel studs (think dunlop strap locks for guitars) and the spacer system. the only problem i ran into was that the rear reciever screw was a bit too long, so when I torqued it up it binded the bolt, but 2 minutes with a dremel fixed that right up.

if i had to do it all over again, i might have gone with the saddle cheek rest nut I'm not completely sure as i don't have any hands on experience with that part. all in all though, I love the stock.

as far as swapping stocks, all you need is an allen wrench and about 5 minutes, you really can't make it any easier.

your best bet is to call them to place your order, some really great people work there, very helpful, info youll need before hand is model of the rifle, type of barrel, if its factory I'm sure they'll know its diameter and taper. short action\long action, left or right hand bolt, pre accu trigger or accu trigger. also have in mind what sort of finish you're going to want, and the various options.

i also have a savage 10fp with the standard stock and would like to replace it, how much are the mcmillains? the bell and carlson medalist "varmint/target" looks nice and isnt too expencive, but ive just seen pics of 1, has anyone else used one? if so how are they?

I called the people at www.mcmfamily.com and they said the stock would run between $700-750. I ended up placing the order thru http://www.snipercountrypx.com/ - Total cost...$584.30
I got the saddle cheek rest and didn't get anything special added for the butt.
Lead Time: Ungodly
This is the first order I've placed with them. I'll post when the stock comes in and let everyone now how good of a site they are to deal with. They seam to have very competitive pricing and a good variety of stuff. Their website runs a little slow though.

I've got 2 of the B&C Medalist V/T stocks, and they're great. Bought them both off the shelf, and was shooting in a week.

Stockade makes some nice stocks too.

Here's a picture of my rifle finally complete.

Savage 10FP .308
18" barrel - 1/10 twist
AAC 7.62SD suppressor
McMillan A-5 stock
Leupold Mk4 6.5-20x50mm Illuminated TMR reticle scope
Harris bi-pod
I'm very happy with it.:D
The Savage Accu-Trigger shoots better than my Model 700 Sendero with professional trigger job.

I have a McMillian stock on both my Remington 700 and M-14 and love them. IMHO, there is no other stock out there that is made to their level of quality, period, dot, thee end! When we were living back home in ND, I was planning on getting the wife a McMillian A5 stock for her 10fp as well but we wound up moving to Florida and then North Carolina so that project got put on the very far back burner as there isn't enough range down here to justify further work on a long range rifle until we can get out of here to more open country.
