Savage 10FP

I finally caved and bought a Savage 10FP on friday. 308/26" & Choate stock.

Anyone else out there have one? If so what do you use for scopes/bipods, etc? How do you like them?

i have one with a Leupold 4-12x mil-dot scope and a harris bipod. i also put a timney trigger on it and ajusted it down to like 2 lbs. everything works like a charm, and for a lot cheaper than some other rifles.

Yep, with a Kahles 6x42 and Burris Signature Rings (double dove-tail)/Mounts. I like this setup a lot - nice, easy, high quality and not too expensive.

i'm using a Sightron SII6-24 w/Leupold rings and a Harris bi-pod with a Harris adapter instead of the rail that is included with the Choate. lucky enough to have the factory trigger adjusted down under 2# (not the Accu-trigger)

Don't have one but after readin Ian's thread on the pistol gripped bolt guns, I'm seriously considering one with the varmint Choate. Didn't know Choate had a model with a wider flatter forearm than the sniper version until reading that thread. (I prefer the wide varmint configuration.)

So as not to clog your thread with my long-winded ones (at least on my very first post here), here is part:

I started out with a box-stock 10FP with an IOR Valdada 2.5-10x42 scope with cheapy Weaver bases and IOR "Badger-esque" rings, and Harris S-model bipod. It shot .75 MOA at 100 yards with Federal GMM and Winchester Match Ammo.

I then installed a Sharp Shooter Supply (SSS) trigger and found my groups dropping to .5MOA with the rest of the same boxes of ammo.

So, it looks like (assuming 2750fps) 44 grains is the magic number that I can start working on.

Maybe go from 43.8 to 44.5 in tenth grain steps so I can go for accuracy.

Two days later I shot some more:

I went to Ben Avery today to shoot for groups. I decided to seat the bullet down a little bit more so that the OAL is 2.88. I also took off the bipod for all shots. The day began at 7:30am at 83 degrees F and ended at 10am (for the following round) at 10am and 93 degrees F.

Just got (well a couple of months ago) 10FP 24" heavy barrel in .308. Choate ultimate sniper stock (a bit heavier than the varmint, and has the rear height adjustment that I don't think the varmint has) weaver (46 front and back) bases, Burris rings, Bushnell Elite 3200 5X15X40, flip up covers for it, and a Harris bipod on the rail that comes with the Choate stock. I also adjusted the accutrigger to the lowest setting.

I live down in Belpre near Marietta but I'm up around Parma Hts. to visit family about every other weekend. I'll be up there this weekend and will stop by Tusco for the plate shoot on Sunday on my way back.

I've been researching the the 10FP-LE2A as the one to get. Which one do you have?

pretty much the same as YZguy except i have the nonrmal trigger and a Sightron scope.

The varmint and the sniper stocks seem to be very similar from the front receiver ring on back (aside from the recoil pads and the rear protion of the cutout). What I'm interested in is the feel of the grip. The grip angle of the Choates look more vertical than something like an AR and more nearer to the trigger than a McMillan or Anschütz.

If you have some time on Saturday, I would like to drop by and shoulder it to see how the setup feels.

How much did you guys wind up paying for your 10fp's? Wal-Mart (I know, I know) seems to have the best price around here at $469.00 special ordered. I'm really thinking about one of these.

I paid a little under $400 including tax from a local FFL buddy.

I paid $440 for mine with the acutrigger (price for the old trigger was around $400) + tax

I think I found the stock for around $150 on the net somewhere (gunbroker)($176 from Choate)

$135 for the Choate stock from Brownell's (using dealer pricing)

almost picked up a 10FP in .223 w/accutrigger for $429.

Aw heck. With all of this researching and post reading I might as well just go out and get one this weekend. If I don't find one at the Medina gun show, I'll order one at B&T (my usual shop).

Now the question for me boils down to the Choate or go with the McMillan A3 (10FP-LE2B) which I'm partial to. But then again I'm always willing to try new things - Choate.

is the Medina show this weekend? one of the dealers at the shows wanted $599 for the 10FP w/Choate. so it might be cheaper to buy a 10FP and get the stock later.

In MA, I paid $550 for a 10FP 26", 308, accu trigger, choate varmin stock. No scope, rings or bipod.

I have seen the same config in NH going for $650.


What about accessory tools? In order to get at the accutrigger settings, I have to remove the stock.The documentation says to re-attach the allen-screw with 50 inch pounds. Does anyone get a torque wrench for this, or just use your 'best estimate' and bare hands (well not bare hands, really.....)
