I've looked over a Savage 10FP (.308) at at local pawn shop. Standard HEAVY barrell and standard stock. What should I look for in terms of wear, or common problems? All I could see was that the barrell had cobwebs in it. They want $285.

The Accutriger is a fantastic improvement. I have one on a Mod. 110.

Suit yourself, but you did not say what the existing trigger was like. If it already has a superb, light, trigger (i.e., 1.5-3 lbs. on a bolt rifle is good for me), go for it.

I would get something with the Accutrigger, if I was to buy another Savage.

Just my opinion.

For 285, buy it and put on a Timney trigger. There isn't much to look for on bolt guns other than tight lock up on the bolt, etc. I say go for it.

Er...I don't know about that. How used is the rifle? How worn is the rifling (and check from the breech...a lot of wear could be there and you wouldn't know it looking down the muzzle.

Remember, you can get a NEW Savage for the money you start throwing at bringing a beater up to standard.

Well worth the money. I have a NON accutrigger gun that I can put surplus ammo into groups of about .75 of an inch at 100 yards.

I have one of those in non-Accutrigger. And it is still a darned accurate rifle. I do wish it had an Accutrigger. The trigger in mine was worked on by a gunsmith. Result was a touch less than 3 lbs, and reasonably crisp. Though it is not what I would call a nice trigger. The Accutrigger is better. The trigger is plenty good for anything other than target shooting from a bench.

The price is reasonable if the rifle looks good. I have thought of getting a better trigger, but honeslty, by then would be very little saved versus selling mine and buying the new version. So I just kept mine.

Thanks for the replies.... Now it's time to see if it can be fit in the budget.

Rifling wears out?

I just wanted to pick up part of this, if rifling wears out how do you protect against that, how do you know if the rifling has gotten bad, and is it merely a matter of replacing the barrel if so?
THNX:)

The Savage standard trigger is adjustable.

You could get it down to about a pound if you wanted to, mine is about 2.5 right now.

Price is OK, if you do not like how it shoots rebarreling is easy.
