I hear you on the fee, but this may be the best we can do. We can't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
This could be the start; once on the books, there could be editing later on, or even a new governer like Ehrlich was. At least it's there. Look at CT: bluest of the blue states, have a meaningless AWB, BUT they haven't screwed with the ancient state CCW law.
Let's face it: based on Manno, Raskin, and Lenett's legislative anti-gun-owner start right out the gate, coupled with this supposed "MD voter surge" to the hard left, MD is on the cusp of easily becoming a lot worse for gun owners than Mass, NY state, or CT. Those places have similar basic CCW applications to MD, and it costs a lot of money there, too, just to even own a handgun. I wish we had CT CCW, even with CT's requirement for numerous personal references and multiple rounds of local and state applications. This bill may get us somewhere near there, and it would still be better than NJ (not that it is saying much).
Kharn,
I agree that the fee could be high. However, if it ensures I actually GET the CCW permit, then the price to me would be worth it. As it stands right now, it is $117 plus fingerprints to basicly be told "no" by the MSP.
While it could be abused certainly, I'd take an outrageous fee plus a permit than the current setup.
Something to keep in mind though, MD you currently have to renew every two years, and that text isn't being changed. could get pretty expensive quickly.
