6 foot redhead Irish tactical attack wife.
tactical she aint.... but if you are in the house threatening her children , chances are very good that said individual will not hold water ( or any other fluids ) much longer. ;)

Using pepper spray indoors would be easier to explain to a judge then if you shoot somebody in the head.

I purposely leave tools laying around the house. My wife thinks I am a slob..... Hammers with a claw are devastating weapons. I know. Seen two guys go at it on a jobsite over a woman. That being said no kids in my house so I have a proper tool within my reach at all times.

After your eyes stop burning you mean? I got hit with some of my own spray in my yard and it was bad enough, I can't imagine letting loose with that stuff in the house.

The judge may ask why you didn't just shoot him if you were in fear of your life.

I'd hate to explain to my wife that I'm sorry she got raped because I used pepper spray and pissed off the crackhead instead of just shooting him.

If someone's in your house and needs to be sprayed, they probably need to be shot and done with. I've had people in my house, sights aligned on them for a body shot, and didn't take it because they backed out slowly the way they came in. Had they taken one step at me they would've died, I was so scared. I would have been much more scared armed with only stingy eye spray, and they might not have gone back the way they did.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned a kukri. Those bad boys can chop a horse's head off in just a couple swings!

A 3 or 4 battery D-cell maglight is an effective bludgeon. Hold it with hand near the light and the body pointing backwards and you can use it as a torch then smack someone if you need to. Very common around here among the security guards/mall ninjas.

this 18'' CS spear point machete would be pretty effective.

on a non gun related forum, a woman mentioned she ws home alone, then she heard a window break, she got up and saw a hand reaching inside trying to open the window, I was thinking running full force ramming with a spear might be a good defense, not sure what the legal issues would be, though.

Sawyer, do you own a CS spear point machete? I have seen them advertised, but I know nothing about their quality or durability. If you have one, I would like to hear your opinions about it. Thanks for mentioning that item.

I don't actually have one (yet), only reason being I'd rather buy one in a store than ordering it online.
I read on some forum the Cold Steel machetes are made in Africa, and of pretty good, if not spectacular quality. They can handle brush clearing and home defense duties with no problem, and since they're so cheap, no one cares if they get a bit dinged up.

No offense but I have a Cold Steel machete ... it is a piece of junk ... I didn't pay much for it and if I lost it I would not care ... it is a Bolo Machete and made in Africa ... might be good for something but I'd be hard put to think of what ...

eta ... It might work to cut corn stalks but I wouldn't expect it to hold up to clearing brush ...

Well. if someone's reaching in the window, the hand is pretty near the sill and could be crushed with a bat/hammer/chunk of firewood. Having been there, I doubt anyone would keep coming after a serious hand injury.

A few thoughts on this issue:

1. What exactly is the purpose of the melee weapon? The model of home defense I work off of is to station myself between said intruder and my family with my shotgun. I have no intention of allowing him to get even close to closing the distance. While I suppose it is possible for him to do so, I doubt it is likely that you would encounter a grappling situation with an attacker unless you were attempting to 'clear' your house. I'd rather sit tight and let him come to me. In which case it's buckshot know question.

2. If someone is breaking into my house, non-lethal force is out as far as I'm concerned. I'm not gonna play games with my life or the safety of my family. The intruder forfeited his life when he came into my house. That means no stun guns, no pepper spray, and not batons. These are fine for defending yourself against and unarmed mugger, but someone with the guts to break into my house when I am home is to dangerous for me to chance it.

3. I now return to the main point of melee weapons and how to keep them around. First of all I don't like the idea of leaving tools around the house. Its great if I'm home but if someone breaks into my house it might actually give them a weapon to use against my wife. I personally think the most valuable weapon is the one you keep on your person. One more good reason to carry a pistol and a dagger or a good pocket knife too.

4. Tomahawks are terrible at close quarters. They are a power based weapon. It is very difficult to wield a tomahawk with power against an attacker who, based on the premise of this post, has already closed the gap so that your gun is no longer useful. I own a tomahawk and love it, but it is a distance based weapon. Once an attacker closes the distance it is a liability more than a help. Mostly because it is so easy to get a hold of the handle in a grappling match.

5. All things told, I have always used and continue to use a mid range knife. I use a 7 inch marine corp Kabar, but I wouldn't mind having a 10 in. bowie either. These are easy to use in very close quarters (i.e. quarters that are too close to use a pistol in), and very difficult to take from a man who is fighting for his family. Just make sure you have yours in a place you can get it out quick. A decent dagger isn't bad either just cause you'll have it on you and can get it out and take an attacker by surprise.

Just my thoughts... take it or leave it.

Owe one more question:
JTW, How much does a 6 foot redhead Irish attack wife cost exactly? ;)

I'm sure the CS machetes are average at best or even "junk", but they'd hold up to home defense usage just fine.
as for a Kabar, a machete would have more reach from a distance, and would inflict cleaving wounds to take the bad guy out of the fight quicker.

I like the machetes made by Ontario myself. They use 1095 steel instead of the 1055 that CS uses.

I'm sure the CS would work fine, but I also use mine for other stuff where I need it to hold up to a little more abuse.

Thanks for the opinions on the Cold Steel machete. I inquired about it because the idea of a quality spear point machete seems to have merit as a de facto short sword. Whether this particular machete is up to that task still remains an open question to me. But, one thing is clear: our members are never at a loss for ideas. Thanks again.

If you need the reach of the machete why aren't you shooting? I thought the whole point of the melee weapon was to use if the BG closed in on you to a degree that you were no longer able to shoot, in which case the kabar is perfect... The machete will also be a bit awkward to carry in addition to a shotgun and or handgun.

Tim ... the material that my CS Bolo Machete' is made out of is only a little better than sheet metal ... I had expected a lot better quality from Cold Steel ...

Patrick .... Couldn't agree with you more ... to me a backup is a last resort weapon ... I have a quality Puma Bowie that I wouldn't mind holding if things got really close but up to that point the Case XX and the W49 are basically 14.5" broadswords ... I think w/ either of those I could keep things from ever getting quite that close and if things did get too close they are still manueverable ... I believe the Case XX Bowie was once carried by fighter pilots as a survival weapon and I'm told the Western W49 was used by some in Viet Nam .... I guess my next choice would be a kid's metal base ball Bat because a full sized one requires two hands ...

the machete would come into play if for some reason a person needed to get into an edged weapon fight ( such as running out of ammo, etc.), also a machete would be more effective in cleaving and disabling multiple home invaders.
