Methinks a 38 Spl would be somewhat more effective...

but this is an interesting attempt at self-defence against rape. The author acknowledges that this thing only comes into play AFTER you're already being victimized, but hopefully, it'll give some of these vermin pause before they choose to attack someone.

Rape-Stopper's Razor-Sharp Bite
Scumbags of South Africa, you have been warned. Later this month, women there "will be able to arm their vaginas with the Rapex device, a product priced at 1 rand (around 14 cents) and sold over the counter," the Guardian reports. "Shaped like a female condom and worn internally, its hollow interior is lined with 25 razor-sharp teeth, which fasten on to an attacker's penis if he attempts penetration."

Some people - including women's campaigners - have criticised the device for being "vengeful". Well, as its inventor, Sonette Ehlers, has said, it's "a medieval device for a medieval deed". If any rapist finds himself hopping with pain as a result - as well as facing the fact that the only way to remove the device is said to be a highly awkward and incriminating hospital visit - that seems just fine to me. Yes, it's vengeful. Yes, it hurts rapists. Oh well.

The device is "inserted with an applicator like a tampon, and removed with the same applicator," according to the Rapex website. It can stay in for up to 24 hours. And it will be "available in various sizes... small, medium and large."

When should it be worn? "If you have to travel long distances alone, on a train, working late, going out on a date with someone you don’t know too well, going to clubs, or in any situation that you might not feel comfortable or even just not sure."

"The myth of the vagina dentata - vagina with teeth - has proved strangely compelling down the centuries, " the Guardian adds, "but who would have thought it would become real?"

nothing new things similer to this have been around for hundreds of years.

From models liek this with razors, to ones that block the vagina, to ones with harpons and knock out drugs

Of course the downsides are that he may not start with the vagina, so it only prevents part of the rape ... and after he hits that thing the desire to kill his victim will surely increase several fold.

No sir, I have to go with the title of the thread, the .38 would be more effective.

Finally a use for snakeshot loads!!!!

that is if it came in .38 spl.

I wish they sold this in the US

but I suppose it would be considerd 'mantrapping' :(

ah well, cest la vie

I remember reading about this. It seems that rape is a much more common occurance their than here. I believe it has to do with a misinformed populace that believes they can cure HIV/AIDS by having sex with someone else. When the man ejaculates he expels the virus is the belief.

It is sad that in this world we need devices like that.

I'm picturing blood, lots of blood.
Some from the guy (possibly containing various STDs) and lots from the woman after he beats her to death.

This "device" depends totally on stealth and could be easily defeated by anyone who is aware of it's presence.

I think some folks here are thinking there's razor blades inside... it ain't razor blades. Still supposed to be painful, but not quite what I reckon some people are thinking.

"Looks like a real good way to turn a rape into a murder."
Yep.

Close. Rape is unbelievably common here in SA. We have a rape every couple of minutes, and if you think I'm kidding, check today's news: IOL.

There's a tragically high instance of child rape in SA, due at least in part to the belief that sex with a virgin cures aids. Yes, there are people this selfish, ignorant and brutal. Part of the attraction of the "Rapex" is that it doubles as a condom. Rape is pretty much a death sentence in a country with SA's AIDS infection rates. Oh, and there's no blood... the device latches on tightly with tiny velcro-like hooks and doesn't come off. Blood would defeat the anti-STD function. The best it could do would be to mark the perpetrator.

Now for the really good news. A .38 special would be great, but due to the SA government's stupid desire to keep people from owning weapons, people are denied licenses to own weapons more often than not. Even if you do get a license, you'll have to wait a year and a half for the process. Unfortunately people have had to turn to stupid devices like this, and paintball guns that shoot pepper balls. In short, devices which have absolutely no threat value and thus can't be used to prevent an attack, which are vastly impractical, and have a better chance of exacerbating the situation rather than improving it.

Next piece of wonderful info: the gun control faction supporting this law has very little local support, but is funded by American gun control groups. A lot of cash gets pushed this way, and in Africa, that makes them important. Well, that combined with ties to Amnesty. Unfortunately, SA gun rights groups get no funding from anywhere else, and we just can't match the power of cash.

Isn't it nice to know that your wayward citizens are essentially killing people half a world away?:(

Could you document this? With the names of the organizations providing the funding here in the United States? Using the power of the Internet we might be able to make them a bit unconfortable...

Which American groups are funding your gun control groups?

Major one is the Open Society Foundation, George Soros' pet political project. They basically funded the writing of our new firearms control act, and carried on financing directly until 2002 when they started going through different trusts and foundations. There are a bunch more, but It'll take some digging to get the material together. Basically, in 2001/2 our gun rights orgs made a very public mess of the organisation's funding, and since then Gun Free's been very secretive about their cash sources. We know our government sponsors them through the Institute for Security Studies, but that's no surprise.

Most of their membership and leadership is non SA as well. Margy Keenan was their face to the country, except people didn't take kindly to an American telling them they couldn't have guns. The current spokeswoman is a Namibian called Judy Bassingthwaighte, and is a huge step down as far as coherency is concerned. Thing is, at least she's from a neighbouring country and can speak Afrikaans. Another one is Paul Somethingorother, a Brit and their chairman. etc etc.

British foundations like Thorpe Trust and Common Cause also fund our antigun campaigners... guess there's not much left to do in the UK.

 So they dont think they'll get murdered after they cut up the rapist's penis? And how many disgruntled wifes are gunna use that on their husbands? :neener:

@ leitmotif

Howsit, chaaina :p
Ja, I have seen these raped children, sometimes babies, and I also am astounded at the pure evil and ignorance that abounds amongst some of these people. The last stats I heard was that a rape takes place in SA every 26 seconds. I don't have the source for that. But you and I both know that crime stats are swept under the carpet because it hurts tourism. Well, I do my bit to prevent foreigners from being hurt. I either tell them to go to Australia instead of SA for a holiday, or I tell them to organise a very tightly-controlled tour of Kruger's or maybe Cape Town.
I have mixed feelings about that device. Many women that I speak to would rather be dead than raped in SA. The HIV rate is very high there. Of course they stand a good chance of being killed anyway, whether they have a penis trapper or not.
But perhaps Zundfolge has it right:

Of course the downsides are that he may not start with the vagina

That's a very likely scenario once a measure like that gains popularity. It's like anti-hijacking immobilizers on cars: these are the ones that only cut out 5 minutes after the driver's door has closed (if a secret switch isn't pressed). The theory is that the carjacker gets you out the car, slaps you around a bit and then leaves you alone, driving away in the car. That gives you a chance to get away and the car cuts out a few miles away. Of course, this was great in the beginning. A lot of cars were recovered. But now they make you tell them where the button is, and take you with them to verify that the car doesn't cut out.

It's no wonder that 3rd world peoples embrace Sarea (sp?) Law after being victimized by first world liberal BS.

My thought on the matter is to air drop Liberator type guns so these people can defend themselves.

PS: I remember seeing video of an armed Muslim mob in SA (I think) that surround the house of a drug dealer and shot it out with the drug dealer, because he was selling to kids. I'm sure that would horrify the liberals in the US but they live safely in a country that stands upon the shoulders of earlier generations of Americans, who would have done the same thing. In real life, Mat Dillon could never have lived to tame Dodge, if the bad guys didn't know full well that the town folks would have hunted them down like dogs and stretched their necks if they shot Mat in the back.

Mob rule and vigilantly justice are natural steps in the evolution of a civilized society and interfering in another nations growth process is unhealthy for that country and leads to more violence.

Odd: Hoesit, my bru. Wat se jy? ;) Ek hoor afrikaans is nogal gewild daar in ou Londen.

Yeah, the record for youngest rape victim is currently at 7 months. 7 freakin' months! Couldn't believe it when I read the story. The official stats are that someone is raped about every 8 minutes, but the problem is that so many rapes go unreported. The figure might be up to three times that.

The "other option" that Zundfolge might have been thinking of is considered indecent assault rather than rape - thus a man can never officially be raped by other men under SA's classifications. And yet it happens. Usually in gangs.

Criminals aren't that dumb, and they might just start looking for these little devices. That's likely to be an unpleasant intro to a terrible experience as well. Sigh.

Seems lately every time I post in a thread on SA I make it out to be hell on earth. It isn't - people are friendly, girls are pretty, sun is warm and the sky is big - but being a self-defense forum I seem to focus on the bad. The country is great, and so are its people. Its leaders are unfortunately worthless scum who are only interested in gorging themselves on the opportunities offered by post-apartheid SA.

If this is accurate, it sounds like a good opportunity for the NRA or other gun-rights group to do a lot of good with a relatively small amount of money. Helping peple in another country be a good example of armed resistance to oppressive crime can only help us here. And it would just be a good thing to do.

Our guys did have Larry Pratt from Gun Owners America over here. Apparently there are political issues connected to what can politically be represented as sponsoring guns in Africa. The bunny-huggers would have a field day, was their assessment. I understand... it's a game of CYA. Don't want to make themselves more unpopular.

Now for a sore point. Gun-free doesn't have any real support in numbers, but they have the cash. Gun rights, on the other hand, has numbers but not that much cash, and our numbers are diminishing as more and more people give up due to the government not bothering to listen. Sigh. Basically the ANC government has a majority vote regardless of what they do, and can happily ignore anything that isn't in some politician's best interest.

Most of the population is with us morally, but isn't ready to put feet on the ground and letters in inboxes.

In the book Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson one of the characters has a dentata, which is similar to this device but puts the attacker to sleep intead. Not sure if that (if even practical... i believe in the book there was a needle that included some sort of sedative... they didn't really get into details) would be any better or worse though. Either way the person would be violated... so yes, a .38 would be more helpfull:)
