ok, some of you may be familiar with the game, Metal Gear Solid. ( for this post, im talking about Metal gear solid 4 or MGS4)

well in the game is a m14 based sniper rifle called the M14EBR its a pistol griped DM rifle

how do you guys feel about the EBR idea infiltrating pop culture (even if the sheep don't know the meaning)

how do you feel about video games. this one represnts, PMC's in a negative light ( keep it no political) while show casing arms. Sig GSR's Springfield Operators, FN SCARS's FN P90's

everything from Marakovs, to Javelin missiles

my biggest beef with these types of games is that the younger player, raised on video games, thinks that these guns cost $50 (the cost of the game) have auto aim, infinite ammo, have no recoil and always take down the bad guy with one shot. i know games have improved so they are more realistic, but i'd still rather see a kid go get a job, earn some money and buy a rifle and learn to shoot in real life. its absolutely nothing like shooting in a video game. you can't feel the recoil on TV. you can't smell the wood of an M1 Garand through the speakers. you can't get that sweet smoky taste in your mouth from the bluetooth controller.

video games have their place. they're fun and i play them on occasion. its still no substitute for real life and learning shooting skills first hand. i'm afraid we've raised a couple generations of couch potatoes that think their "experience" is real enough.

i tried for 6 years to get my ex's nephew out to the range with me. his liberal guardians wouldn't allow it. guns are evil blah blah blah. but they'd let him shoot up his buddies in Halo online all day long. just sad.

I see no problem with it, personally

how do you feel about video games.

I have no problem with them, or those that play them. I enjoy a good video on occasion myself (more of a BF1942,BF2, and BD2142 fan myself)

this one represnts, PMC's in a negative light

what's a PMC? The answer to that iwll depend on how I feel about them being portrayed in a "negative light";)

I think it boosts the sales of AWs. Grandpa and Dad's generation wanted cowboy or WW2 guns, like they saw in the movies. My generation (I was born in 1981), wants what we see in movies and video games. You notice how many young guys by ARs and AKs?

I've been awaiting that game for a long time, but have no PS3. Sneaking AWB in there is pretty clever, even if most people won't get it.

I know video game shooting is no substitute for real, but sometimes that's all you can do. And it's always fun to play the role of a legendary soldier.

Video games are what got me into firearms in the first place. All the different kinds and the roles they filled, different amminution and equipment. It was fascinating. And still is, but even more now.

So Hoppy, is MGS4 as amazing as I think it is?

I believe that video games in part are helping to keep our sport alive. The more people exposed to guns, the more people we have a chance of converting. Anyone who has shot an m16-M4 in a video game, will surely love to try it out in real life. As well as other guns. Im more of a Tom Clancy: Rainbow Six kinda guy, but will be sure to check out MGS.

I happen to have this game (MGS4), as well as the previos one (MGS3: Snake Eater), and I like the realism very much. I also find it interesting that the "bad guys" (they're bad in the context of the game's story) are using FN SCAR-Hs instead of the AK. How times have changed!

What I like about this game is the realism in weapons. For example, the SCAR-H, G3, HK21, and M14 EBR are all 7.62x51mm weapons, and just like real life, they all share the same ammo in the game, so if you have 893 rounds of 7.62 ammo, that ammo is available for all the 7.62mm weapons. You can use it in whichever 7.62MM gun you want. Same for the 5.56mm M4 and AK-102, and the .45ACP GSR, Operator, and MAC-10, as well as whatever other guns happen to have a certain caliber in common.

I don't have any problem with people playing these games, because they ARE just games. Nothing you learn in a video games transfers over to real-world skills. Sure, I like to take my AR-15 to the range and wreak havoc on soda cans, shoot-n-Cs, and milk jugs filled with dirt, but it's also fun to shoot up bad guys in a game (whether it's Metal Gear Solid, Call Of Duty 4, or Grand Theft Auto). The fact that most of us can't shoot everyone up in real life makes video games fun, and therefore video games have their place for me. Some might call it stress-relief ;) .

>"...but i'd still rather see a kid go get a job, earn some money and buy a rifle and learn to shoot in real life."

This is how I feel about Guitar Hero (I'm a guitar player though so I have my reasons for this). But I've never heard of anyone thinking that what happens in video games will transfer over to real life. It's just common sense.

To the OP,
>"...the EBR idea infiltrating pop culture..."

What exactly does that mean, the EBR infiltrating pop culture? Just curious.

Thanks.

Personally I like the MGS series and have been waiting for MGS4 for awhile now (pre-ordered).

What I don't like about these games are the players who get all their gun info from these games. I've had these people tell me with the seriousness of a congressinal investiagation that:

M16s are worthless.
No one under 6' 300lbs can fire a .44mag, .454 Casull, S&W500 without breaking their wrist.
Anyone can be a sniper with the right rifle.(PSG, MSG, M21, M24, ect.)
The list goes on and on. Most of these posers haven't even handled a weapon let alone fired one, except for airsoft.

What I did like about MGS4 was shot placement works. 3-5 to the chest or 1 to the head. I only Feinstein doesn't hear about the "smart gun technolgy" in the game, otherwise we would hear her praising it as a "sensible step in the right direction".

So Hoppy, is MGS4 as amazing as I think it is?

oh it is. theres so much more to it than in any of the previous games, and i loved all of those

what's a PMC? The answer to that iwll depend on how I feel about them being portrayed in a "negative light"
PMC = Private Military contractor. i see some one referred to them as a mercenary's but while a rough correlation could be made in reality they do everything from logistics to combat.

"BlackWater" who you may have heard about on the news is a PMC company.

well on the forums such as this EBR means Evil Black Rifle . and while in the game its probably named so for the stock its in ( Sage International EBR stock http://www.sageinternationalltd.com/si/access/ebr.html#m14 ) i found it funny to see the phrase EBR in a video game

i agree id rather see a kid get a real rifle and shoot for real. its not a option for most. since they cant buy a firearm till 18, cant afford an AR till you pawn a kidney, and many parents these days "dont want a gun in their home" i dont think its an option for some people until they move out and start their first real job ( 18 after HS, or 22/23 after college)

It's no sillier than people getting all they know about firearms from cheap thrillers, cheesy TV shoot em ups and movies.

By the way, it's not very High Road to refer to others as sheep/sheeple.

I knew the M14 EBR was real, and what EBR really stands for, but where did the term "Evil Black Rifle" come from? Just a joke withing the gun community?

I thought it was something to do with the AWB. I think it was, anyway.

MGS4's quite good. I liked the ammo compatibility thing myself. Might try out Online again soon.

I do see what you guys mean with the people passing off games as knowledge. To be honest, that's partially why I come here, to actually understand things.

Sadly, barring a huge change of heart here, I'm unlikely to experience much of what Bobarino was talking about.

I am a fan of the Ghost Recon 2. There are alot of futuristic weapons on there but some modern and even older guns. I always use a 1911 as my pistol. One of the marksman packages is a scoped SKS. On the game it performs just like a scope SKS. I missed somebody 10 times at 400+/- yards. Made me mad. Sorry if it a little off topic. It is just I have wanted to bring that game up a couple of times.

I have no problem with it and here is a little known fact: my MK14 SEI was used to create most of the depictions you see in the games.
I supplied detailed pictures of my rifle to the game designers over two years ago for this very purpose. Here is a proof they sent me:

If you look real close you can see matching serial numbers

MK14_SEI_Mod-0-.jpg

The EOTech was removed for the picture and the picture was taken before I returned the EBR to SEI for updates and engraving.

Can anyone post a screen shot from the game, I'm not a gamer and have never seen them.
I also provided pictures of my Mod 1, has it shown up in any games?

Thanks

I want to pick this game up for my 360, I'm just waiting to get it used so its little less expensive.

The game I'm really looking forward to is Battlefield: Bad Company coming out this month...

Looks like some nice EBR's in this game...

I have no problems with EBR's in video games, I was playing Doom when it first came out and I was but a teenager then and I continued to play shooter games up to this very day. The only adverse effect it had on me was financial, video games are damn expensive to buy. Still every time I play a game like Rainbow Six or Call of Duty it makes me want to go out shooting afterwards:D

YUP:D Only because it really disappoints me that the "game shots" were so much more accurate than I.
