Possible hostage situation/ man with gun, etc. "stormed" the Miami Herald offices...Being reported right now on all the cable news outlets. The reporters and their verbal descriptions of weapons they haven't even seen just kill me. I've heard all sorts of speculation. I guess you can tell which station is more-anti and less-anti by how positively giddy some of them are getting over the descriptions of the possible weapons involved. Pick your poison with the reporting here...

MSNBC has had several, everything from a "fully automatic AK-47" to "a machine gun with a scope" to "several assault weapons and knives"

FOX has "man in cammo clothing with a shotgun" ( maybe a hunter who got lost? )

CNN is a bit more laid back, reporting "hostage situation within Miami Herald offices"...so far no EEEE-vil looking gun reports. Since this is CNN, i'm surprised so far.

Maybe MSNBC can up the ante by going with something like " hand-held portable mini-gun, as seen in the movie 'predator' "...

MSNBC needs to put someone like Keith Obermann on the job to build up the frenzy this story needs to truly get blown totally out of proportion! As bad as this story is, I just want to hear that this guy was found and no one was hurt in the process.

Earlier, I heard the anchor-twit on CNN referring to it as a "laser gun, if you can believe that;" the police officer corrected her to "machine gun with laser sight."

Probably a semi-auto rifle or carbine with some sort of laser attached.

if its in miami its probably a highpoint with a laser pointer taped to it. the guy is probably wearing a shirt that says "CUBA SI,CASTRO NO" . most likely caused due to too much cuban coffee.

10-Ring...

+1, i just had the same idea come to mind!

Situation update: at least the situation got resolved without anyone getting hurt. Good ending for the cops, the bystanders and even the BG. I love that CNN has now upgraded to "machine gun"..LOL!

MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- The gun-wielding cartoonist who had entered the Miami Herald building, demanding to speak with an editor Friday, has been taken into custody without incident, police said.

No injuries were immediately reported, and police spokesman Delrish Moss said authorities believed the man was isolated on the newspaper's sixth floor, which houses the Herald's Spanish-language publication, El Nuevo Herald. Officers set up a perimeter around the downtown building.

The man came through the front door with what appeared to be a machine gun, Moss said.

It wasn't clear whether employees from other floors were being evacuated, but about 60 people were gathered outside the building.

The Miami Herald reported on its Web site that the man walked into the sixth-floor newsroom, appeared agitated and demanded to see El Nuevo Herald Executive Editor Humberto Castello. About 12 to 15 employees inside the newsroom were present, employees said.

It was the second situation involving a gun at the newspaper in the past year and half. In July 2005, former city commissioner Arthur E. Teele Jr. fatally shot himself in the Herald lobby after asking to speak with columnist Jim DeFede. Teele had been under investigation for corruption and was just indicted by a federal grand jury on fraud charges.

DeFede was fired for recording his telephone conversations with Teele just before the shooting without the politician's permission.

El Nuevo Herald is one of the nation's largest Spanish-language newspapers and is published by The Miami Herald Media Co.

Well the situation is over now, but what I'd like to know is this:

1) How can you NOT tell a machinegun from a shotgun?

2) Don't you think that the press would catch on and realize there have been like 2 crimes committed with machineguns in the last 70 years and hence it would be safe to assume that the crime being committed was NOT being committed with a machinegun.

3) If reporters can't give accurate information to their viewers and are consistantly wrong on gun info, why are they still allowed to keep their jobs and more importantly, why don't they get more informed?

1) The media knows absolutely nothing about firearms. The police know next to nothing about firearms. The blind leading the blind.

2) There have been hundreds upon hundreds of crimes committed with machine guns. Legal machine guns, very few crimes committed; illegal machine guns, a bunch of crimes committed.

3) The media cares very little for accuracy. It is driven by the results they can achieve.

I'm glad it was resolved with no one hurt.

Also, "gun wielding cartoonist" is just plain hilarious all by itself. :)

Its true that many non-gun owning people hear the term semi-automatic think full-auto. I still know people the believe anything automatic can be fired full auto. It shows that reporters are lazy.

Lets try this.
Liberal journalist is convinced by the DNC to pull this stunt in order to provide political ammunition for the next AWB that is sure to come now that those scum are back in power!!

Let's see if his "paper" puts up the cash for a high power attorney all funneled through the DNC, of course!!

I would not put it past those Democrats to do this!!

I heard a bit about this on the radio today. Something about a 'Disgruntled Cartoonist'.
Odd isn't it? They never tell us why the person was disgruntled. Usually Gun and Disgruntled in the same sentance is enough to make the masses think he's a bad guy with a mental problem. :uhoh:
Folks like me ask, what did the company do to screw the guy over bad enough to make him 'Storm the Building with a Machine Gun'?
Storm the building lol, he probably walked in and asked where the &#@$5 boss was and where was his back pay.

MIAMI (AP) -- A cartoonist carrying a toy gun that looked real surrendered to police at The Miami Herald's building Friday, more than two hours after arriving and demanding to see an editor of the newspaper's Spanish-language sister paper, police said.

Jose Varela, 50, carried a knife and a black plastic toy gun that resembled a real semiautomatic weapon, police said. He was charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a firearm. He was being held on $22,500 bond, jail officials said.

Varela had problems with El Nuevo Herald, where he worked as a contractor, including its position on Cuban emigres, said Police Chief John Timoney.

He had routine access to the building, officials said.
