Hello All

I am looking to obtain a "safety inspection" of a handgun in Michigan. My brother-in-law passed away and his wife wants to give the handgun to me. My sister-in-law and I live in the same state.

I have looked though the threads here and have learned that according to federal law I do not need to complete paperwork of this transaction. But also need to apply by any state or local laws.

In Michigan you need a "permit to purchase" a handgun which is issued by your city or county. Unless you have a ccw, which I do. Since I'm not "purchasing" this, what am I going to have to show the city in order to complete the "safety inspection" process?

Any thoughts would be appreciated. This was my brother-in-laws hunting pistol and there a lot of whitetail memories in there.

Tenacious:

Call your police station and ask when they issue the the cards. Go down and they should explain to you what needs to be done. The giver will fill out the permit to purchase (green cards, three copies) and you will take the copies back to the police with the firearm for inspection and give you back one of the premits fully completed and the safety inspection card.

If you are a Michigan CPL holder it's even easier. You can use the white cards thatyou can download from the Michigan police site and have the giver fill out the cards and then you take them along with the pistol to the police for the inspection.

This may not be valid info, but, it seems to me if you were to take the original safety inspection card and the weapon to your county sherrif department with your sister in law to inform them of her wishes for you to recieve the weapon, they would do the necessary changes as far as paperwork was concerned. Your ccw would prove the necessary checks have been implmented. Anyone....please correct me if I am wrong.
