Mid range scope for AR-15

Just got an AR-15 for my mid range shooting fun...it didn't come with any sights so I need to get a scope.

I'm looking for a variable mid power (1-4x, 2-7x, anything close) scope for under $350. I don't really want a plain hunting scope, I want something with bullet compensation and maybe even range finding capabilities. Would also be nice if it was compact sized.

Any suggestions?

I know my budget may limit me on this, and I might spend more, but I'd like to keep it reasonable.


Hell, I really like the ACOG, but I just can't spend THAT much.

Well, you cant really even get a decent rangefinder for 350, much less a range finding scope.

I've been looking at this bushnell 4200, http://theopticzone.com/detail.aspx?ID=5036 its pretty close in price. How about you get it, then let me know how you like it?

Seriously, I'm interested in the same thing. I'll keep an eye on this thread.

I dont mean a "range finder", I mean a scope with a reticle that will aid in range finding...that would be a nice feature

Super Sniper 10X is the only real tactical scope, well you could include the Bushnell 3200 10X tactical but it is not close to the SS. Here is a good illuminated 1-4x scope:

The problem with Millet unless they have changed quite recently is their tendency to fall to pieces and then you get stuck in the Millet Customer Service purgatory for a year and maybe you will get a new scope. That is generally why I don't recommend Millet, their scopes when they work are a good value. Though Super Snipers are made in Japan while Millets are made in Japan. So all things equal SS gets my vote and I would not touch Millet until they get their stuff straightened out.

It's not mine either but you do hear more than a few different source in the forums complain plus the Millet representative has pretty much substantiated these claims so it should at least be out there so people can make an informed decision.

What's "mid-range", to YOU? From what to what?

I can wholeheartedly recommend the Nikon Omega for around $250.00. It has a ballistic reticle.

I suggested the only budget tactical scope worth a damn, one that has a warranty by bushnell, is made in japan and actually used by the US military. You offered a chinese made scope with known quality and customer service issues. There is a reason why there are no good quality budget variable tactical scopes out there. They are too complicated for the chinese to make both cheap and reliable so they choose cheap.

My experience with Millet customer service was great. New scope no questions asked. DMS, sold it but would still recommend it.

It is good to know they have their act together. I think the problem was back 6 months ago or whatever they were having such problems with production that they had no good scopes to send people. I still say dollar for dollar the super sniper is a better scope I can't bring myself to recommend a chinese optic to anyone ever especially when there are Japanese and Philippine made scopes for the same price. The Chinese have not figured out how to make a reliable optic yet. They will someday but by then the cheap stuff will be made in North Korea or someplace of yet undiscovered cheap labor.

This is a pretty common type thread from the optics forums. And this along with the other 5 or 6 threads I have read is what will keep me from buying a Millet, but if they work for you guys go for it:

Here is a quote from SWFA and they sell the scopes:

"Unfortunately Millet is pretty consistent with their duds. We have heard more complaints than praises from Millet LRS owners. I don't know of any China produced scope line that does not have quality control issues."

The latest complaints about Millet scopes is internal fungus, yes fungus, so not thanks.
