I was at a Gun Show and I heard a dealer talking to a guy about Military Ammo. He stated that 223 Military Ammo should not be used in a standard 223 bolt action rifle.I had never heard that before. What gives? Was he just blowing smoke?

Cause its not actually 223 military its 556 military and has thicker cases and higher presures. That said I shoot it in my Bolt actions and believe most bolts will take higher presure than a auto loader.
That is just my opinion and there will be plenty who will argue both ways.
There are some other threads that explain chambers, freebore and other things if you search.

No, he is not blowing smoke. You should not shoot 5.56x 45 in a .223 marked firearm. Although they have the same dimensions, and are somewhat interchangeable, the 5.56 has a thicker case and higher pressures than .223 Rem. Using 5.56 in a .223 marked weapon will increase wear and will most likely lead to weapon failure after extensive use. It could be dangerous to shoot. The chamber "leade" is different in .223 and 5.56. You can safely shoot .223 in a 5.56 chamber, but with a slight drop in velocity and accuracy. Some .223 marked barrels are safe to shoot with 5.56, but you should ALWAYS check with the manufacturer. Some AR15 makers do this, as a marketing strategy, but CHECK. Be safe and happy shooting.
