I've heard that military grade 5.56 ammo has a higher pressure load and therefore should not be used in .223 remington rifles.

1. Is this true?

2. If so, does it hold true for civilian ARs and other commercially sold military style "assault weapon" rifles chambered in .223?

Check to see what is stamped on your barrel. Most civilian ARs are stamped 5.56 and can shoot both 5.56 and .223 just fine. If the barrel is stamped .223, I wouldn't shoot 5.56 ammo in it, at least without confirming with the manufacturer that its ok.
