Military Crimp Removal Opinion Needed

Folks,

I was given about 3000 LC 223 shells with military crimps. I've cleaned the cases, resized them, and removed the primers. Now I need to remove the military crimp.

I'm dithering between a Dillon Super Swage, and RCBS swager, and a CH4D primer pocket swager.

My question is, regardless of which one of these beasts I use/order, in the meantime, if I want to do some reloading, is it acceptable to simply use my RCBS deburring tool (looks like a missile) to ream out the pocket and remove the crimp? I could chuck the thing in a 1/2 drill press or portable drill and use it that way until the new toy(s) arrives.

Yes, you can.

But it is very easy to overdo it with a drill mounted chamfering tool!
Especially a new sharp one!

I'd probably just do them by hand, one at a time, until you get a swager.
Much easier to control how much you take off that way.

I use a Lyman primer pocket reamer hooked up to a portable electric drill or a drill press. Normal case mouth reamers do not get the job done.

You can still prime the case's with the crimp, but it will be hard, and this is a good way to brake your hand tool.

No, you actually can't on most crimped GI cases.

If you do manage it, you will almost certainly break or crumble the primer compound, or smash the primer cup, and missfires, or worse will result.

Don't even try it!

Thanks all for your quick responses. I greatly appreciate it. I've the RCBS case mouthing deburring tool, so I'll use it by hand (good advice rcmodel).

Now, I just need to decide on which swaging tool. Decisions, decisions.

Recommendations?

I think I have read of rim-deformation issues with the CH4D, as it does not support the case from the inside like the Dillon & RCBS. It just holds the case by the rim in a standard shell holder.

None of the above. Although I'd like the dillon,but too expensive. I tried the RCBS with bad results. It didn't remove all of the crimp. Even after complaining to customer service about the undersized spud, NOT moving the crimp enough, I get another one the same size!:banghead:

I mount it in my RCBS case prep center, along with inside/outside chamfer tools, a primer flash hole deburr tool and neck brush.

I have the RCBS and it work great. It pushes the crimp out of the way just enough to get a new primer in. New primers go in snug so you know they wont come out.

Pay attention to what RCModel says. However I used an RCBS simply because thats what my friend had.

During the very brief time I reloaded .223, I used a Dillon Super Swage that I borrowed. Worked like a charm.

Not to me. The angle of a debur tool is too broad, it removes too much metal from the sides of a primer pocket when you cut deep enough to remove the crimps. I LIKE a lot of side support for my primers!

Just got my Dillon Super Swage 600. OMG that's a wonderful machine. Took about 10 minutes to get it setup and adjusted. VERY slick.
