I have a few 7.62 mil brass shells that have what appears to be slight splines on the shells just above the extractor head. Do these indicate that they are used in M60 machine guns or possibly not to be used in them?

I have only incountered the "splines" your referring to on military 7.62x51 Blank cartridges.

What USSR is referring to is the staining/deformation of a cartridge case that has been fired in a fluted chamber, as are found in most HK g3 style weapons.

Did I mention that these shells appear to be manufactured this way on purpose?

Are they "splines" or a knurl? I have some 93 LC MATCH 7.62 brass that has a knurl around the head about 1/4 inch above the rim. The knurl is very light and only about 1/16 inch long. The brass is unfired and was manufactured with the knurl.

Speaking of LC match brass.... I have a bunch of Vietnam era, head stamped 64-72, LC match brass. Am I going to have to swage the primer pockets? I'd heard the match brass might not be crimped.

To Hexhead: The 93 LC MATCH brass I have is unprimed, so it is not crimped. I cannot speak for any MATCH brass that was factory loaded.

Do the splines look like they might have been shot through something similar to this?

If so blame HK's inspiration. Neat concepts and performance.....bad for reloaders. Becoming more common.

What you describe sounds very close to these shells but they are not marked "match". I have a small amount of 30-06 brass that read "match", but these read L.C. 82 but also has NM also. Could this really stand for National Match? I would send a picture of these rounds but I'm not familiar with how to paste it in this message.

Does that nonsense come in .223 / 5.56 as well? If so it answer a question on some range pick up I've got.

I'm guessing yes. Does it render the case scrap? That's where mine went....

Yep, two flavors: HK93 in .223 and HK91 in .308. As previously stated, the brass may look bad, but it gets ironed out when fired again in a normal chamber.

I don't think anyone addressed the crimper primer issue. All match brass that I have ever shot or reloaded is not crimped. Crimps are not needed in match brass since it's not generally fired out of automatic weapons where a loose primer could shut down the weapon. Not good in combat.

Mr. GPB: (& you other kind folks):...I viewed the link you gave me and YES----my brass is exactly the same. But the "splines" on my cases are very light,..not near as deep as the diagram would lead you to believe. You fellows are really nice to help me out with this info.

When i sold 308 brass, i pulled all the HK stuff out. and threw it to the side. loaded a couple and fired them out my Rem 700. cases came out straight again. so i sold off the normal 308s, and started loaded the HK stuff. a bunch of my buddies were asking me questions about it. I told them watch this....HK goes in, smooth brass comes out. they all laughed.

Hey USSR : Would you teach me how to add photo's to my threads? I'm sorry to appear so stupid but Forum's are new to me. Does the fact that I use an apple computer matter? I've tried several things but nothing seems to work. Drack in Florida
