You probably have seen this before but still good...

USMC Rules For Gun Fighting

1-Bring a gun. Preferably, bring at least two guns. Bring all of your
friends who have guns.

2-Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Ammo is cheap. Life is
expensive.

3-Only hits count. A close miss is still a miss.

4-If your shooting stance is good, you're probably not moving fast enough
nor using cover correctly.

5-Move away from your attacker. Distance is your friend. (Lateral and
diagonal movements are preferred.)

6-If you can choose what to bring to a gunfight, bring a long gun and a
friend with a long gun.

7-In ten years nobody will remember the details of caliber, stance, or tactics.

8-They will only remember who lived.

9-If you are not shooting, you should be communicating, reloading, and running.

10-Accuracy is relative: most combat shooting standards will be more
dependent on "pucker factor" than the inherent accuracy of the gun.

11-Use a gun that works EVERY TIME.

12-Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to
beat you to death with it because it is empty.

13-Always cheat = always win. The only unfair fight is the one you lose.

14-Have a plan.

15-Have a back-up plan, because the first one won't work.

16-Use cover and concealment as much as possible.

17-Flank your adversary when possible. Protect yours.

18-Don't drop your guard.

19-Always tactically reload and threat scan 360 degrees.

20-Watch their hands. Hands kill. (In God we trust. Everyone else, keep
your hands where I can see them).

21-Decide to be AGGRESSIVE enough, QUICKLY enough.

22-The faster you finish the fight, the less shot up you will get.

23-Be polite. Be professional. But, have a plan to kill everyone you meet.

24-Be courteous to everyone, friendly to no one.

25-Do not attend a gunfight with a handgun, the caliber of which does not
start with a "4".

Nice.

5-Move away from your attacker. Distance is your friend. (Lateral and
diagonal movements are preferred.)

This statement needs to be rephrased. "Move away" is not part of the warrior vocabulary. The statement should be "out flank" an attacker.

7-In ten years nobody will remember the details of caliber, stance, or tactics.
I'd have to partially disagree with #7. The details of Tactics and Caliber in notorious gunfights such as those in Hollywood, Miami, Philipines and Somalia, among many others, are debated endlessly.

Of course, I guess the point is that it is of very small consolation to those wounded or killed in such battles.

I was wondering how long...

It would take for that to show up on THR.

Or for somebody to take exception to calibers starting with 4 rule saying, my 10mm, .357 magnum, superdooper fill in the blank round is good too.....hmm....still waiting.....

And, I'll add the other classics

Rule 0.5: Wear kevlar. Kevlar and a gun beats 2 guns.
Rule 1.5: Bring long guns. Why wait for em to get that close?

Reminds me of the first rule of a knife fight:

1. There are no rules.
This is the sum total of ALL the rules for ANY fight, and if that knots up anybody's shorts, you can add Rule 2:

2. See Rule 1.

Nice

Or more simpy:

"There is one tactical principal that is not subject to change; it is to use the means at hand to inflct the maximum amount of wounds, death, and destruction on the enemy in the minimum amount of time."

Gen. George S. Patton

I like this idea:

23-Be polite. Be professional. But, have a plan to kill everyone you meet.

OK--I'll bite. If these are the USMC rules, why does the USMC issue 9mms to 99.9% of its troops who have handguns? Perhaps these are the old gunfighting rules?

What I was taught was the last man, or unit, that is upright, breathing, and not bleeding too much, WINS. The first item is optional!!!:D

Biggest gun to bring to the fight, 16" Naval gun of the Iowa class battleships. One shot, many killed. :D

As I understand it the military rules for gunfighting with a handgun are:

1. Make sure you have a buddy with a rifle, a SAW, or an LMG.

2. Throw the damned pistol away and get your buddy to take out the idiot who thought he was up against a pistol.

Sad to say, JMiller...the Navy no longer has bigger guns than the Marines.

Marines still have 8 inchers...biggest the Navy sports is 5's.

The nice thing about rule # 12 is that if they grab your empty gun by the bbl to beat you to death, they're gonna need skin grafts for the burns on their hands!!!

Probably because, like most everything else we have in the Marine Corps, the Army didn't want them... :D
