I used to post a lot there back around 99-00 when Bravo was literally making like 5 posts every 1/4 hour.... I'm still there from time to time but generally don't have much to contribute so I lurk. When I do post I posted as B. Douglas but now there's a few others by similar name, "cowpie" is about fitting now if the email doesn't give it away.
It's funny, I'm actually trying to burn this barrel out so I can justify having it shipped out to be built into a custom rig. Been playing around with a lot of 163grn AP boolits trying to get the desire to experiment out of my blood before getting a high priced barrel only to run shoddy bullets through it. Fun stuff doing 3200fps with bullets that may have only done 2800 out of a 30-06
Anyhow, getting used to the 300WinMag is an experience for sure. Past 3-4 years my primary accurized rifle with any sort of decent long range potential has been a 15 pound AR15 squirrel rifle from hell. It's certainly going from one extreme to the other.... Hard to get used to having to sit there and take it like a dog when firing the 300WinMag from the prone not to mention missing out on the bullet impacting through the scope like I can do with the varmint AR.
My first handloads have a lot of room for improvement, rifle has only been on 3 outtings to test for accuracy with handloads. That said most all handloads are beating out Federal Gold Medal 190s as I'm taking into account the long throat of my PSS. Very first load I put on paper at 100 yards is right at 1 inch for 5 shots and that came after a lengthy 40 rounds from the prone, probably was a little less than stable during those 5 shots. The loads I tested at 350 were 190grn Sierra Match Kings on RE22 and the ones I tested at 450-500 were 178grn Amaxes over RE22. Wasn't really testing the accuracy of the loads rather I was testing my ability to use the Mildot reticle and get first round hits.
Loads of fun. Just can't tell which rifle project I want to complete more, I've got an AR10 A4 that I'm thinking of having a 260 Rem upper built for or whether I'd prefer to send off the 300WinMag to have rebuilt into something along the lines of an F class gun in a sort of M40A3 pattern. There's a 1k yard range about an hours drive west of Bakersfield with a small group/club of people who maintain it, I'm looking to get in with them and do some shoots once I get up to speed.
As it stands now, it's gonna be a good 6 months before I get close to burning out the barrel on the 300WinMag, time well spent learning the trajectory of the round and learning to shoot the rifle. Not about to waste 1500 rounds burning out a good barrel while learning to shoot the gun and not realising it's accuracy potential fully. Wisdom of the Roster was not wasted on me. Just hope I can develop enough skill to realise a fair amount of the rifle's potential after having it built up. Fortunately the accurized AR15 in of it's soft recoiling sissy glory helped to establish decent fundamentals, trying to maintain them while blasting away with the 300 though is quite a challenge.
