Milsurp - Portugese v South African

I've shot the linked port in a PTR and FAL with no problem. Probably will be harder on the firing pin eventually but it's good to keep an extra pin around anyways. Seemed to me to be a little hotter than the SA. Definetly a little cleaner and seemed more polished than the SA. A lot of .308 shooters consider Port to be the Filet Mignon of surplus varieties.:p

I've shot the linked Port from Dunham's in my M1A and my LRB M14SA and its fine. Don't worry. And its on sale for $40. Happy delinking!

Where is Dunham's and will they ship to Idaho? All my .308's love linked Port. I consider de-linking to be the plinking equivalent of foreplay.

(Did I say that out loud? Can I say that THR?)

Allright fine, I'll be the first to say it. There's going to be a difference between apartheid and post-apartheid ammunition. I would go for the earlier stuff if you catch my drift.

They may be some merit to that. I think Apartheid SA spent considerably more on it's military than post-Apartheid SA does now. Who knows.

Oh yes, most assuredly. You can quite literally count the amount of working major military vehicles in South Africa right now on two hands. In apartheid they had thousands. I may be mistaken, but I believe around 20 percent of their military has AIDS. I don't think they retain a single working sub. Their infantry is a joke!

I was joking with my friend that with two South African FALs and 5k ammo each, and a few satchel charges, we could destroy their entire country's working military and coup it.

Ghost squire, you may be right there. It used to be a matter of pride to have belonged to an SA infantry battalion - the training and fighting abilities were world-class. Nowadays...don't even get me started :fire:

My DSA StG-58 does well on SA . . . in fact, it shoots it better than the highly-touted Aussie ball that surfaced a while back.

I've heard nothing good about Indian, and there were a few lots of bad (excess pressure) Venezuelan floating around a few years back.

My sentiments exactly. I have never served, but from what I have read they were at least equals to the Israelis in combat effiency. Like the Israelis, they couldn't afford to lose a war like the Soviets and Americans. I have a great book called "South African War Machine". They had artillery that to this day is better then almost any countries. Probably only our Paladin exceeds it, and even then it actually doesn't have the range of SA artillery, even with rocket assisted rounds.

The South Africans also had some of the best small war vehicles, again at least on par with the Israelis and their modified M113s. As a matter of fact, the US is now testing some of these vehicles and many are in use in Iraq as we speak! The South Africans beat the mine/IED, and only now after hundreds, if not thousands of losses to them, are we catching on and updating our vehicles.

Sorry for the off topic!

The Rhodesians (now Zimbabwe) pioneered anti-mine vehicles - a lot of the SA designs had their roots in that conflict. I posted a few pics of SA vehicles in Iraq in this thread.

There's another book that's worth looking at called South Africa's Border War, 1966-1989 by Willem Steenkamp:

Great thread, I'll have to check it out, along with the book! There's a book called beating the mine or something... put out by Galago. The Rhodesia/South Africa subject is absolutely my #1 interest.

I was in the SA infantry before I was yanked away to the SA Air Force (mid 80's) - if you have any questions, I'm a PM away. Won't be able to answer everything, of course, but I can point you in the right direction for most things.
