My local gun shop has a stainless mini-14 for 595. it has a scope i plan on replacing but that and some cleanup is about the only thing. this isnt about if i should get it or not, its about cheap ways to increase the accuracy on the mini, any help on this?

Accu-strut.

You can also get a trigger job and glass bed it.

The Accuracy Systems adjustable gas block worked for me. ($90 + shipping)

Reduced diameter gas block bushings are also available for less cash.

Ruger must have decided that they had to have enough gas flow in the system to cycle surplus ComBloc (Yes, the bad guys made 5.56 rounds too.) steel-case trash under arctic conditions, after soaking in a salt-water bath for sixty days!:what:

Reducing the speed of the op rod in SOME way is the fastest way to reduce group sizes. Good hand-loads help too but Ruger's lawyers don't like those.:scrutiny:;)

Try some handloads. I tried a handful of loads I made for my buddy's AR in my Mini just to check for function, and to my surprise I actually had a GROUP! Not a pattern...a GROUP! Normally my Mini is around 3" at 50 yards with factory ammo with bullets in the 55gr range. I used 69 grain Sierra Match Kings over IMR-4064 and my groups were around 3/4" at 50 from a sitting position! Not bad!

I am working with handloads first, but someday when I have $ in the piggy bank I will get an AccuStrut. I am quite fond of my 100 yard rifle.

Hey Survivalist, I've got a Mini that I enjoy a lot. It's blue with no scope mounts. I get 1.25" groups at 25 yards and about 2.00" groups at 100 yards with store bought Remington 55-grain FMJ using the iron sights. There is nothing that I have done to modify it except for a pre-ban flash hider with bayonet lug.

Mine has little accuracy. The word is foreign to it. But, :) :) :), it is sure fun to shoot. Spray and pray, baby! Spray and pray!

BTW, I'm working up some handloads to help. But it is doesn't work, I don't care. I've more accurate rifles.

+100 on the accu-strut & trigger job. made my m-30 a shooter. quality optics & ammo play a big role also.

I have a M30, bore polish, trigger job, bedding, recrown, and muzzle brake(had a little benefit from, I used the Eagle with H-K type sight) and small glass brought it around. A heavy recoil spring (Wolf) cut down the brass flinging to about 4-6 feet instead of yards.

IMHO it depends on the serial number. If it's a 580+ series then it's probably 1moa @ 100 yards if the shooter does his part. I get 1" groups at that distance off bags with mine. a year ago Ruger completely re-tooled the mini production line and newer rifles are much more accurate than their predecessors. The barrels are heavier.

+1 on the 580 series. And the 580s are just about to get better. Those (regular Ranch Rifles, not the target ones) being shipped in 2008 have a new, heavier barrel - same diameter as being used for the 7.62 x 39 and the 6.8. Some of these have already reached dealer shelves. This will add some weight to the front end that some won't like, but they should shoot even better yet.

Bought a used Mini 14 Ranch rifle. It had a terrible (gritty) trigger on it and would not hit a 5 gal. pail at 100 yds. Replaced the barrel with a Shelin heavy barrel, had the bolt face taken down, had some trigger work done on it, stocked it with a Clark laminate, and slapped a Veri-x lll scope on it. It now shoots MOA all day long with my handloads. Cost as much as a new AR but I love it. dgang

I had bought one of the newer 580 series rifles over a year ago and had 2-3 inch groups with american eagle 55 gr.When it came to wolf ammo it was 4-6 inch groups.I feel on hard times and to sell it for $350.00.$250.00 less than what I paid for it.I feel that if people are willing to spend over $550.00-600.00 dollars of their hard earned money, they should at least have a thicker barrel and some what better accuracy out to or past 100yds.I was still happy with it though, but if I was going to get another .223 it will most likely be a Saiga.

Glass bed the stock.

Interesting. Not that I'm likely to be buying another one at this point, but interesting nonetheless.

An aftermarket syn stock couldnt hurt. My minis stock was tight when it was like new, but a few hundreds arounds and 10 years later (can you say safe queen) its alittle bit sloppier than used to be. Ive also read that instaed of bedding good results can be had with "shimming" the stock with aluminium tape.

Take the $580, add a couple hundred dollars, and you can have an AR-15 type rifle.

That way you can completely skip spending a whole bunch of money trying to modify a rack-grade Mini-14 in the hopes that it might shoot as accurately as a rack-grade AR-15 type rifle.
