mini 14 as a starter varmint rifle

To me, the OP should consider a bolt gun like the CZ 527 for accuracy or choose the Mini-14 because it's fun to shoot, makes a good general purpose rifle, is very good for defensive purposes especially if you don't want the rifle to look too "evil", and to me it would make a great hog or coyote rifle. One of the nice things about them is they shoot just fine dirty and from a defensive point of view, I don't think two rounds within an inch and a 4" flyer would be so bad at 100 yds. Frankly I can't shoot one that good with open sights. If I had a newer one, I'd mount a scope on it, but it is an older one from around 1989-90.

After reading all the gun forum BS about Minis I decided to to take mine out to the range and see what it would do. I bought it in the early 80s for $225 with a Weaver K4 on it.

Twice, I put ten shots in a row on a ten inch triangle gong set out at 200 yards.

So much for gun forum BS, mine will easily take out coyotes out to 200 or so. That's all I ask of it.

I never had a problem with my friends mini 14 (he won't sell it). It's a older model with no drilled factory site mounts. Hell first shot at 300 yards was a bullseye. Dropped a deer with it. Yes it may not be as nice as a well built ar but I like them.
