mini-14 equivalent

Isn't .30 carbine known for being pretty weak?
Yeah, but so does 5.56NATO, it is just a rumor...the .30 Carbine has a little less energy than a .223 Rem. and a little better TKO value. As you can imagine it is not a big thumper, but it is nothing to sneeze at either. It has about the same power as a .357 Mag out of a carbine...which is enough to kill deer sized game at relatively close ranges (sub 100 yds.). It is a great HD/SHTF rifle! :)

Sometimes 10 isn't enough. Maybe he wants to hear it go bang more than 10 times without reloading. Maybe he's like me and misses a lot. Hell I question if 30 is enough sometimes.
Well, if 'spray and pray' noisemaking is the objective, I recommend one of those airsoft MAC-11s. They are certainly cheap, and the mag holds 50 shots.

I thought the mini 14 / mini 30 were quite reasonably priced as they were. If you want cheap get a Chinese AK as it is that and ammo is also. Note that I have a mini 14 ca 1976 and a three year old SS Ranch Rifle w/folding stock 30 RND SS mag. I also have a SS mini 30 w/folding stock about 5 years old. What I paid for all three Is about what you would for for a tricked out AR! I have shot coyotes and deer as well as other critters and I am VERY happy with them. My friends with AR platforms always brag but when we go out to the range I more than hold my own and seem to have LOTS LESS problems than they do. NUFF SAID:D

That would be neither a rifle nor a firearm. I'm sorry I didn't clarify I was looking for a firearm in my first post.

Well there goes Nerf, paintball, BB guns, air rifles and all the other good high powered rifles. :D

If you can live with 10 rounds capacity with a tradeoff of cheap ammo while still having the power to reach out and touch something, and less mods then take a look at the PSL (7.62 x 54r).
I have a Remington 742 Woodsmaster chambered in .30-06 with a custom thumbhole stock (bought it used, don't know where the stock came from) which fills pretty much the same role as the PSL.

points:
semi-automatic rifle (or carbine)
folding stock
ability to accept high-capacity magazines

I'm going to say that the AR-15 is, AND REMEMBER THIS WORD: currently a cheaper alternative to a Mini-14. Most Mini's for sale in Kansas city are between $750 and $900 dollars and-

Oh for the love of God you already are typing a reply aren't you? Sit on your hands and don't fart.

DPMS recently, and by recently I mean sometime last year, introduced the "sportical". This is basically a cheap, cheap AR that can fill the void left behind when every other AR manufacturer, and by that I mean every stinkin one of them, decided to jump ship and sell AR-15's for far more than they were ever worth. Apparently when they were teaching Capitalism in High School the AR-15 manufacturers community was asleep or ogling cheerleaders, THE FAT ONES:

. <- that guy on the bottom is probably the owner of Ruger and he's enjoying himself. The small girls to the right actually own one AR-15 manufacturing company each.

The sportical originally came without the forward assist, making it easier to produce and therefor they could sell it for far less. But recently I've been informed that for a small price more they included the assist while still managing to keep all the other traits a stripped-down, sightless AR-15 needs like accuracy. In fact these very AR-15's were going for a mere $725 dollars at the MVACA Gun Show in KC this past weekend while the Ruger Mini-14 was going for nearly $900.

It's strange really I remember reading so much about how the Mini-14 was the "cheap alternative to an AR-15". Yet recently I'm seeing AR-15's going for less or the same price and I find myself wondering: Is Ruger sniffing glue? And not elmers glue like you had in school, but the kind of industrial glue used for permanently attaching wood laminate to particle board.

Can anyone tell me of a rifle that could fill a role similar to that of a mini-14?
i.e. semi-auto with plenty of aftermarket at a reasonable price, maybe chambered in something bigger than .223?
Civilian AK is a pretty good match for your criteria. I used to own both a mini-14 and a SAR-1 (Romanian AK in 7.62x39mm, comparable to .30-30 Winchester); I eventually sold the mini and kept the AK.

Here's my AK in its current configuration:

The rifle, optic, light, and mount together cost significantly less than the MSRP of a bare mini-14.

The price of the Mini and AR are inching steadily toward each other. I looked at the DPMS Sportical today. Only about $100 more than the Mini. Of course, you don't get a rear sight with that.

I got my sportical for $650 out the door. It is for the range and stays clean so no need for forward assist or dust cover. I like it a lot.

but I still think the mini ranch rifle is a suitable rifle for many uses, including entry-level IDPA and farm varmint control, without making you look like a swat team wannabe.
;)

NRA Edition with Hogue stock and 20 round mag shown, I have 2 30 round mags for it as-well.

Will the 7615 out perform the Mini 14 open sights at 100 yards?

I would rather something in .308/7.62 personally, but again, depends on the application.

I have two firearms in .30-06 which is very similar to .308 ballistically. Also, they both have scopes. I want open sights or aperture sights or bead sights NOT glass.

I think I'm gonna have to get an AK.
Can you buy a folding stock for a Saiga without the conversion?

Yes, but the balance will be wrong.

I (and many others) have found that for a little more money, you can do a basic conversion and enjoy a better trigger pull and balance.

I think we need to mention that doing a conversion on a Saiga should only be done if you are in a Free America state. Occupied States, like the People's Republic of California or Massganistan will have some issues with such a simple procedure.

I agree 100%. My trigger is great and though I have rifles that balances better...it is much improved. :)

30Mag, ProMag makes 30rd magazines for the Saiga 223.I have 6 of them, bought them from Sportmans Guide for around $53 for 3 of them. You do not have to modify the gun at all. I guess if you want to get 922r compliant, you could put a couple more USA made parts on it,but I have yet to run into any 922r cops out in the woods at my place.
