Mini 14 muzzle brake

My Minis have flash hiders. They are home and personal defense carbines; most home invasions occur at night. I commute to work in the darkness all year, and most of the year, the drive home is in darkness.

Have any of you who disdain flash hiders ever fired a defensive shot at night? I have, though it was a .357 mag, and my GP100 does not have a flash hider.

Flash hiders are not a fashion statement.

As for muzzle brakes, I have no use for them, personally, and they increase the apparent noise level.

I still maintain that flash hiders are more for the tacticool looks. If you or the OP wants one then get it, get 5 while you are at it.

I have shot my Mini in broad daylight, dusk and muzzle flash is of no consequence.
Your mini probably has an 18.5" barrel, and ammunition choice also makes a difference. There is a noticeable increase in muzzle flash and blast when going from an 18.5" .223 to a 16" .223.

Worst of all is a 14.5" .223 with an integral brake (for 16" OAL), though. A guy at a USPSA carbine match I shot in had one, and I believe that was probably the loudest rifle I have ever heard. Not something I'd want.

Adding a muzzle brake or flash hider (preferably the latter) to your Mini 14 can indeed improve the accuracy dramatically by reducing barrel "whip". Worthwhile addition to a great rifle.

I asked this question before I really checked into it. My question should have been;

Does anyone make a muzzle brake or flash hider for a Series 197 Ranch Rifle??

Dave

My gun is a 197 series built in '04, according to Ruger. Masen says; "Fits the Pre 2005 Mini 14 rifles with the older sight."

Is this the older style front sight?

Thanks,

Dave

Yes that is the older style sight with a pin holding it on. Get a brake/flash hider and try it out, you can always take it back off if you don't like it. I had a stainless mini a few years ago. I cut the barrel down to 16.5 inches and installed a pin on stainless Eagle flash hider. It actually did cut the normal 6-8 inch 10 shot groups to an honest 3-4 inch groups. I was quite surprised.
