Minimal Gun / Practice

So, my question is, what's the minimal amount of practice your comfortable with when it comes to a very small and challenging handgun? Do you take it out of its holster for a few rounds at the range or is it your part of your normal routine?

I've been shooting 4 mags a month through my LCP for about 2 years but I think I'm going to up it to a box after I get my 2nd LCP

Thanks for the replies, guys. For what it's worth, I shoot my CCW (jframe) more than any other gun I own. I try to shoot between 150 to 200 rounds, 20 to 50 of those rounds being my SD stuff or something comparable.

The carries get enough rounds through them to ensure proficiency at 7-15 yards. This could be one mag or two. Once you know, you know. No need to waste ammo.
agreed.. I have a love/hate relationship with my carry gun because of it's size and trigger pull. I understand that it is more likely to be used in an emergency (than my others) so I only shoot it to check reliability

It really isn't a concern, even in my 60's, although I go to the gym 5-6 days a week, and that helps keep your strength and agility up.

That's great to hear. So many otherwise healthy older adults let themselves waste away do to lack of exercise. I find this really sad. It doesn't take much, but if kept up can increase your "functional years" dramatically.

I'm only 25 but still do some wrist strengthening exercises specifically to help with recoil control, such as pushups on my fists.

Also video games, "she is a gamer and very good"

Hey, the days of video games only being for young people is over.

Practice, Practice, Practice baby; as much as you can~! I attest that with todays
ammo prices; thats easier said than done, especially if you are shoot'in a center
fire handgun. It will not hurt anything to say drop down to a good ole' .22LR
[most places sell Federal Champion ammo by the brick for $15.88 + tax]; and
get lots of practice in. On a CCW, I like too put 700-800 rounds down range,
before I tote it. YES, it gets expensive; but how much is YOUR life worth~? :scrutiny:

There's a form of practice that hasn't been mentioned yet. IDPA matches.

It let's you practice your draw and ability to use cover and encourages you to move as needed rather than stand and deliver. It also encourages a good compromise between speed and accuracy. Finally you will be called on to shoot from a variety of standing and kneeling postures. Again good practice on handling and effectively aiming and shooting your gun from positions other than the calm standing target stance.

It's also not all that spendy on ammo if the stage designer went with relatively realistic scenarios.

There was a fellow on here the other day that talked about using is regular CCW rig for a match. Sadly he reported that other competitors were shocked that he would use his 5 shot J frame and carry a handicap of only having 5 rounds. But if you simply avoid this "gaming" outlook then IDPA matches can be a great place to take your daily CCW rig to get in some fun and practice all at the same time.

I don't know people defend themselfs every day in this country. Many have never been to a range or else went 1 time to test pistol. How many 38 revolvers have laid in a draw for years and never shot till needed.

We are a different group on the internet We shoot way more than most people . My brother carries but very seldom shoots. Even though I have a small range right in my yard.

Tell me be before the so called shootings schools How did the common person defend himself . He might have shot tin cans or a paper target. But that was about it. Now we have all these fancy schools and teachers. . They want you to belive you need to spend 1000's of dollars to learn to shoot their system and Be top gun on you steet. Tell that to the 80 yrs old granny that dropped the BG with her dead husbands pistol that she fired 20 years ago,.
I think Cooper and those that have followed Just found a way to take peoples hard earned money.

Up until just recently, I couldn't afford to shoot often so my proficiency was very low with my CC handguns. I'm currently working to improve my technique with weekly trips to the range where I shoot at least three magazines worth out of each of the guns I carry. I know I should practice more, but ammo is expensive and I ain't Bill Gates!

Ben86: 25 years old hey, post in about 50 years and relate about old age and being out of shape.

As you are, I once was, and as I am, you will someday be.

People use what is effective and they know how to use.

I am 73 and when growing up, my Mother carried two 12 gauge shells in her apron pocket and kept a single barrel shotgun behind a standing ironing board. Saw her shoot aggressive stray dogs and once a feral billy goat which made threatening moves in the barn when she was going to milk the cow.
