I am looking at 2 different scopes, each have 1 in tube with either 40mm or 50mm.
Th gun is a .17 HMR FVSS (basically flat round barrel)
What are the lowest rings I could use for the 40 and the 50?

Could I get away with medium rings on the 50? Low on the 40?

Thanks

nope. go high, on the 50, and medium on the 40. for the 17, I suggest the 50, as you need as much light as you can get in, to see the 17 cal hole on paper, even at as close as 50 yds, and especially at 100 yds, plus at 100 yds, you will need at least 18x, to see holes in the paper.

I use mediums on all my 17's that are carrying 42mm objs'; and on a couple of them, the clearance is hair thickness, that is all...

rangerruck said it right...medium rings worked on my savage 17hmr with 40 mm objective...tried low rings and there was barrel to scope contact... For hunting, the 40 mm obj is all you'll need.

Ok I just ordered a Centerpoint 6x24x50 scope and have read about a problem with some or the rings people get.

What are the brands of rings that I can get that fit the factory installed bases?

I would go with millet or Leupold rings, Leupy has good variety, kwik site is good for cheapies, and also take a look at what BKL rings/mounts has to offer...

Possibly yes - depends upon the ring. Trial and error, trial and error.

My quote function is suddenly not working.
