I needed a shellholder for 9mm Luger and my die set called for a #8. I stopped in a gun store today and found anRCBS #8.
Unfortunately, I didn’t read the fine print. A #8 RCBS holder is for .45 auto rim. My dies are Hornaday and a Hornaday #8 is not the same.
So, if anyone is loading for .45 auto rim , I’ll send you a shell holder free of charge.

I'm sure you are not the first and won't be the last to find that out. I once saw a chart that correlated the numbers for different makers. It's one thing that sure would be nice if there was a standard numbering system.

Lee's is #19 for 9x19 and 40 S&W.

The (okay, MY) problem with the commercial charts for shell holder size is they don't list all the cases that can interchange.
F'rinstance, most everyone knows .30-06 Springfield is a rather flagrant copy of the 8mm Commission (usually called 8x57mm Mauser) and both cartridges take the same shell holder. So anything based on the 8x57mm or .30-06 cases are the same.

I have found that .303 British and just about all the belted magnum cases are the same. As is the .30-40 Krag. .30 Carbine and .32 ACP are the same, if you're curious.

I put together a list showing the shell head holder numbers and categorized them by cartridges. Now I'm this far, I cannot find it on my computer! I was going to share. When I find it, I'll share it. Presuming I do not get distr... Squirrel!
