entlemen:

First post and I've got a question. I'm a Missouri resident and I went thru my CCW course then applied for a non-resident Utah permit. 75 days later and I received my permit.

During the course, the subject was outlined that a CCW meant one could not only carried firearms concealed but other things defined as "weapons" under the MO code. Ie. automatic knives, asp, etc.

Looking closely at my Utah permit, it is defined as a Concealed FIREARMS Permit. Does this in fact mean that the permit only qualifies for a firearm in MO but a MO CCW Permit would have qualified for any "weapon?"

I'm a bit of a knife collector and it would have been nice to be able to not worry about how local municipalities define the pocket knife length. That was honestly my expectation.

Am I reading all of this correctly?

Thanks in advance!

You would have to look at the actual language of the MO laws before you could reasonably determine whether the Utah Concealed Firearms Permit would be sufficient to allow you to carry other types of weapons. The laws may specify that a MO permit is required. Or not.

I agree with Car Knocker about checking the Mo. laws. Depending on what states you may want to travel to Florida non-resident will give you IIRC 3 more states including Florida that Utah does not. Florida is a "concealed weapons" permit and so does cover knives, of course it will still depend on the state you are standing in at the time. Jim.

I have read the State laws and I concluded what I posted above. I was hoping someone else from MO could enlighten me further as to whether my impression was correct.

A very knowledgeable poster had the following to say in a Missouri specific forum.

You are correct that your Utah permit limits you to firearms.

Yes, the Missouri "endorsement" is a concealed "weapons" permit which is not strictly firearms but might include other instruments capable of deadly force which are otherwise legal to obtain and posess in Missouri. If the instrument itself is not legal to start with in Missouri, no permit, including our own, changes that.

Your Utah permit however, is a concealed firearms permit which, if you were in Utah, would not grant you the right to carry concealed, other instruments capable of deadly force. Therefore, do not assume that it would somehow expand itself to other things just because you are in a state where the permit and law structure are different.

As a permit holder, you have "permission" to do certain things (obviously with certain restrictions) by virtue of the authority who granted it. Since Utah did not grant you a "weapons" permit, is it reasonable to conclude that Missouri would extend a priviledge to you that Utah does not...just because you are here.?

You have a more limited "license" by virtue of where you chose to apply. Whether or not Missouri might see it another way is a moot point, since the existence of your permit is based on compliance with Utah law and the law in the state in which you plan to exercise your "permission".

I use this as a brain teaser in my classes when the subject of "which permit should I get" comes up.
