I'm ready to throw this gun through the window. Bought it four hours ago... no rounds through it, no disassembly, nothing.

Now... Here is what's happening.
-magazine goes in fine until it get's to magazine release, then it meets a lot of resistance, and has to be tapped in. Removal requires a thin screwdriver to pull it down.

-no matter if there is a mag or not, the bolt comes back 3/4 way, there's resistance, and then with a hard pull, it goes back all the way.

-bolt gets stuck in rearward position, and can be pushed forward, as long as mag is out/bolt release is down.

-mainspring housing will move out about a quarter of an inch, then won't move at all.

I think that's all of it. I have no idea what's up. I'd like to be able to fix this without having to contact Ruger after only having it for a few hours. Any ideas?

Did you buy the gun new or used? Didn't you try the bolt and magazine before accepting it? Sounds like someone forced it together after taking it apart.

The only task that may require a tool (a tap with a rubber mallet when new) is taking the barrel off. If anything else has to be forced something isn't right.

I suggest:
1. study the manual
2. take it apart
3. study the manual
4. watch the numerous youtube videos
5. pay attention to the dingleberry and cheese
5. Don't force anything

New.

I've tried tapping it on the barrel to bring the hammer completely up, and that worked, but then after racking and dryfiring a couple times, problem came back.

I have a mark 3 and fought it the first few time taking it apart. If you don't put it together right it is difficult to pull the bolt back and the mainspring housing is almost impossible to pull back.

The experts for this particular pistol are on rimfirecentral.com under the mark 3 section. Ask your question there and it will be answered in no time.

I am trying to find the video now. There is a really good video on Rugers website on how to take down and reassemble a mark iii. Mine pissed me off to no end the first few times. It will go together and appear to be correct but if the hammer is not in perfect alignment during the assembly process. You get what you are describing. I will post link if I come up with it.

Check you tube but make sure you are looking at mark iii videos because it is slightly different than a mark ii.
