As some may know, the Minnesota Legislature, in reinstating the 2003
Minnesota Personal Protection Act, made a few changes.

As a result of this change, some NRA instructors may not be certified to
teach carry classes after September 30.

A couple of NRA instructors and I decided to do what we could to fix this
quickly, professionally and ethically.

A Little Background:

In the past, an instructor certified by the Minnesota BCA, MALEFI, NRA,

AACFI, POST or a state's Department of Public Safety was certified to
teach a carry class. (See
http://www.revisor.leg.state.mn.us/data/revisor/statutes/2004/624/714.html,
subd. 2a.)

However, in the 2005 law, an instructor must be certified by "an
organization or government entity that has been approved by the
Department of Public Safety in accordance with the department's
standards."

Those standards can be found on the BCA's web site.

Who We Are:

The Minnesota Association of Defensive Firearm Instructors (MADFI) is a
nonprofit organization approved by the Minnesota Department of Public
Safety to certify MCPPA carry permit instructors.

We are a non-profit, membership-based organization dedicated to
providing a smooth and cost-effective transition for instructors with
existing training and certification, and to keeping those instructors
up to date with the latest legal and practical updates.

Our active board members include an attorney, a Ph.D. who is an expert
in curriculum and instruction, and a professional writer.

How We Work:

If you have already received quality instructor training, such as that
offered by the NRA or AACFI, we will provide you with the additional
training mandated by the DPS regulations (it takes less than four
hours) and will certify you as a carry instructor.

To remain certified with us, you agree to audit another instructor's
class every year, to be audited by another instructor once a year, and
to read and incorporate our legal updates into your instruction.

As long as your classes meet the state requirements, you remain an
instructor in good standing.

What It Costs:

Our training class for existing instructors costs $50 and is good for
five years. Our annual fee is $25, which covers our administrative
expenses such as sending updates, scheduling audits, and maintaining
the web site.

What We Don't Do:

We don't tell you what to teach, where to teach it, or how. We don't
charge you for every student you teach. In fact, other than the two
fees above, we don't charge you ANYTHING.

How To Join Us:

If you are interested in becoming certified by MADFI, or just want to
learn more, send us an email with the following
information:
* Your name, address, day and evening phone numbers, and email address
* Your existing training and/or certifications
* Whether you prefer a weekday evening, a Saturday or a Sunday class
* Any comments or questions

Our first instructor class is scheduled for Saturday, October 8.
