Modding a Mosin.

There were 17 million Mosins made and not all are collectible although most are shootable.

If it were, say, one of a model only made for two years in numbers less than 200,000 yeah I would complain. I have one all-matching Mosin 91/30 that will stay "as-issued" and I have a parts carbine that I have bubba'ed at will and may yet try a "scout rifle" project on.
Even then, I'm not sure I would complain, because all of that person's work to mess up that rifle just increases the value of the other 199,999 rifles that (maybe) didn't get messed with.

That's the nature of collectables - one kid rips open his new toy, melts it with a magnifying glass, lets the dog chew it up and throws away the box. Another kid keeps the thing in the box and rarely plays with it, years later it's rare and worth something to someone.

I always played with my toys, but rarely abused them. Sometimes the dog did chew them up though :(

If I'm not mistaken there were around 37 million Nagants produced. I could be wrong. Could look it up again but am too tired to care.

I do believe I'll be going Monday or Tuesday to pick up a 91/30 for the base of my build. Even though its going to be tough to beat usnmars project, Imma give it a damn good try. I'm probably going to iron sight it for a bit until I can add to my budget. I do not have the resources to turn a barrel blank or afford one already made so it looks like I'll be going with that's on it. Either way I look to have fun doing this and hopefully will figure out how to upload pics via my phone directly to this thread as I use Tapatalk pro. (great app for any of you smart phone users out there. $2)

A couple of things I'll be doing a little different will be using threaded rods and counter sunk nuts instead of dowels. My gunsmith suggested some kind of wood glue apoxy that he uses when he fixes or restores stocks although he said that any type of good quality wood glue would work. I guess I'll see how it goes. Pray for me..... and my accident prone ways. Hopefully I won't glue my hand to something important, or anything for that matter.

I haven't decided on the paint scheme I'm going with just yet. There's no telling with me. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. I have the means to do the "snake skin" pattern but don't know if it will look good on this particular gun. I have the only 4 colors of Krylon camo that my local Wally World had in stock plus I think I have some "active model" paint left over from another project that holds up very well. (its what model builders use on, well, models that are used ex. Airplanes, boats, etc. ) Anyhow, I think my coffee is wearing off. I'll post as I go along.

Again, thank you usnmars for your post and link. Very helpful.

So, I'm at a bit of a stand still atm. The 91/30 stock is horribly crooked. I don't really know how I didn't notice it until now. So, I have to order another stock.... BTW, I didn't notice this until after I had already made my first cut.....

I purchased 2 MN 91/30's in December, one to keep original, and one just to have some fun with. i wanted a nicer looking stock, and decided to build my own from a slab of black walnut that i had found. The link above has some excellent links that memebers shared with me that i used as a guide.

I ordered bedding compound last night, and am going to glass-bed the receiver as next step. The link above shows the progess i made on it... I am farther along now than last pic, and am satisfied. I have less than 25.00 in stock, that's including used recoil pad & finish, but over 40 hrs invested. (1-3 hrs at a time, spread out over about 15 nights so far. Just building the stock was fun, as i had never tried it before, and i got what i wanted... not plastic, and not full length military.
I know you are looking at a different design than this, but overall concept stays the same.. Best not to get in a hurry was best advice i got

Thank you for your post. The current Mosin is just one I've been playing around with in my head. If I am good at it I'll probably do more, its just getting over the initial hump. Like other projects of mine in the past, keeping momentum going while life tugs you in different directions. I'm sure everyone who reads this knows what I'm talking about.
I am at a point now where I need a strait stock for a Mosin. The other is prepped and planned. I can't do much till I get another stock and my eyes adjust and heal from the Lasik surgery I just had. Either way, I should pick back up on it in a week or so. I'll keep yall posted.
Thanks, Jamey.

I bought a bubbarized MN for 25 bucks, a yard sale BSA pistol scope, $15.00 scout mount, made a riser cheek piece and I am a happy camper with it. Turned out to be one of my better cast boolit shooters.

..... I'm doing my damndest not to bubba the gun..... thus the time and considerations I have been taking.

I will say that the crooked stock I have already cut would make a heck of a "pistol grip" Mosin ..... Not that I would EVER EVER EVER shoot it like that. I like my face being not mangled by the end of the barrel.

Here's a stock idea that I've been pondering with the mosin. It's going to be a wooden tactical styled stock inletted for a M4 carbine type collapsible stock (possibly) but I may just make a wooden shoulder stock for it in my design.

I did this in paint, so forgive lack of high quality.

Dont know if it's anywhere along the lines of what you want to do with yours, but this is what I'm starting with.

I'm sorry but I don't see the advantage to bubbarizing the MN if you can buy something modern for the same price, or mod it without completely destroying a good rifle. Maybe you like the 54R cartridge. Buy a PSL. However, if you're doing it for fun...well, whatever makes you happy I guess. I'm just saying that with the cost of building a custom MN you could buy a Remington 700 SPS or something. Or buy a real MN sniper.

I personally wasn't very happy with the ATI stock. The first was twisted and bent. The second wasn't as bad but did make me go through a lot of extra work to stabilize it. I had to bed aluminum channel in it because as I floated the barrel it kept opening up on one side as I removed material from the other side.

I agree with the person who suggested Boyds!

Modern rifle for $100 that has the same attributes? Where? I'll take 2.
I like the rifle, just want the stock a certain way... If it can be pulled off without "bubbaing" the rifle, which by some of the work that people have done thus far is excellent, the why not on a cheap rifle. Plus its somewhat of a hobby. Either way, its something I want to do.... just sayin....

I think they meant the cost of the rifle + modding costs. For the total invested, one could start with a modern rifle instead.

There's potentially some value in that advice.

I do think it's a shame to mess up an old military rifle, but then again they're cheap and they're plentiful, so what are ya gonna do.
