Model 1 Sales .22 lr uppers

The Mrs. just asked me what I might want for my birthday. After some discussion, the topic of a good .22lr rifle came up. Yeah, I know. “Get a 10/22. It’s cheaper and blah blah blah…” Niet interested. I also don’t need Compass Lake accuracy (or the price for that matter).

Since I want something fairly accurate, I decided to pass on the conversion kits. I don’t have an accurate .22lr. If I already did, I’d get a kit.

Anyway… it seems that the cheapest player in town is Model 1 Sales. So my questions for those who have Model 1 uppers are:

Are M1’s offerings relatively good and accurate uppers?

Is a 20” or 16” heavy barrel gonna give me anything that the 16” Light Weight barrel won’t?

Are there any ammo No-Gos like with some of the .22lr pistol conversions?

Are you happy you got that instead of a Conversion Kit.

And for everyone: Are there any other upper options in that price range.

Thanks.

Take a look at the Spike's Tactical dedicated .22LR Upper. I've got one on order.

it depends on what you want to do with it.
However seeing as you stated :
Since I want something fairly accurate
If accuracy is what you are after , look into a bolt gun , Savage or CZ.

If plinker/cool factor , go for the 22LR upper.

I looked into a Model 1 upper. The problem they have is they are dependent on Ciener to deliver the modified parts. He's awful about supplying parts and they told me it could be 6 weeks to 6 months. I ordered from spikes. They make their own bolts in house for their uppers. Their lead time was 6-8 weeks for an upper. They might be more expensive, but they have top notch customer services from reports I've seen, and make a very good product that they will support.

thanks JTW Jr.,

But the question was about dedicated .22 lr uppers. Bolt guns that don't have Cosmo aren't our thing.

Spike's is a bit more than I really wanted to pay, but anything that is truly dependent on Ciener makes me a little less than happy. hmmm... may have to nix the idea for now or see if I can justify the extra expense.

I'm not totally trilled about the cost to begin with. If it was truly just a birthday gift for me, it would be an $80 Nagant Revolver. But, in truth, it's a family gift since it fills a hole in our "order of battle".

I'll take a look at Spike's again but didn't like that the lightest (only?) contour they had was an M4 barrel and at $100 more, it may be out of my league. Kinda cool that it’s a true 14.5 inch exposed barrel.

IMO a heavy barrel is not really necessary on a .22 lr ar-15 upper. A heavy barrel on an ar-15 type rifle isn't going to get you much more in terms of accuracy and heat shouldn't really be a problem. For what you pay for an upper, you could get a tricked out 10/22. I decided I wanted something that looked and felt like my AR-15 upper for training and feel since 5.56 ammo is expensive. I already have my bolt .22 that is plenty accurate for me.

I own the spikes and like it a lot.

I went with a 10" barrel for my SBR and I'm happy with that length. The gun balances very well. It feeds everything I've used in it so far but it shoots the Federal bulk pack well, which is nice because it is relatively cheap. I have heard that some low velocity rounds don't work well, but I haven't tried anything slower than the CCI standard velocity.

Another available option it the Tactical Solutions dedicated upper. You might want to give them a look. They make their own bolts as well, at least from what I've heard, but I think they cost about what the Spikes uppers do.

Armed Bear has one of the model 1 uppers, I expect he'll be along shortly.

Another vote for Spikes. I've got one, love it on my pistol lower. Cannot wait for my SBR tax stamp to arrive so I can shoulder it when I fire it! I actually have two uppers. One I built with a second hand new barrel at 5.5" and a FF pistol hand guard, and the other a short carbine barrel at around 12 inches. I swap bolts around for now, later I'll get another bolt. But Spikes is coming out with targer barrels in the near future.

Armed Bear likes them. I would have gotten one if it wasn't for the long wait. I don't need my .22 uppers to be expensive or .mil spec. Just function reliably and look and feel right.

Model 1 seems to use good barrels, parts. They were good to deal with regarding the order I had with them that I cancelled.

Claude Clay,
Please PM me. I need to give you my address so you can send me my new keyboard.

Small update. I did confirm with M1 that they are backlogged but they should be getting on top of that soon. They weren't waiting on JAC parts; they were waiting on their own bolts. Still a 2 month wait, but I may be ok with that.

What kind of accuracy do you get with the Spikes upper ?
Minute of soda can at 50 ?

Dam you guys , another toy I gotta buy for my kid , yes that's is wife , its for the kids ;)
