Model 10 S&W police trade in

Hi folks,

I just got a police trade in M10, finish is pretty worn, but gun looks to have been carried much and shot little. Naturally it has the 4 inch barrel.

I'm wondering what a S&W reblue and tune up would run, and if the little feller is worth it.

Also considering having it rebarreled to a 2 1/2 inch barrel for CCW.

What do you think?

I got one of the police trade-in Model 10's few years ago.

The M10 didn't need any "tune-up" work at all..... it shoots fine as-is.

I've never had a gun re-finished..... the wear on a blue gun adds character..... and you won't have to worry about getting that first scratch!

It would be easier and less expensive to buy a 2.5 inch gun, and sell your M10, if you want a 2.5 inch gun.

I believe that your classic Model 10 is best left as it is, unless there are mechanical problems that need attention.

Mike; I love decent police trade-ins for the same reasons. The action should be pretty smooth. It's probably been shot enough
to wear it in. An action job would be a waste of money, it wouldn't make it much better! Have it reblued if you want. S&W
is your best bet! They do top quality work for about $150.
If you just want a gun,and don't care how it looks, just shoot it, and enjoy. I wouldn't change the barrel , unless it could be done
reasonably cheap. BUT:
I have a 2" M-10. It's not too big for CCW, if you use a cover shirt with tails out. I love this gun! It fits my hand great and I
can do my best shooting with it. Bob

Crap, just buy another one with a 2" barrel for CCW.

Lord knows they're cheap enough.

If you want to refinish it, AWP did my Kimber 120.00. Love that rust resistance and quick clean up.

I second the idea of getting another. With some looking or a copy of Shotgun News, you can get one for 225 or less. New barrel is over a hundred from S&W. Trim job from a GS would be more - have to get a new front sight.

Reasonably priced used S&W M10s

I was looking at CDNN catalog the other day. They had some very good prices on M10s. Only 4" were listed as used, but they might very well have a limited number of two inch on hand. Beter still, you might luck into a three-inch. Worth a phone call to their toll free number, anyhow.

BTW--I don't believe the 2.5 " bbl was ever listed for the M10. I really don[t believe the M19 2.5 bbl could be modified to fit--The M19 cylinder is longer than that of the M10 besides, this could be really expensive, especially since it woudl need a different front sight as well. (It would look really cool, though--Fixed sight short barrel M10 with under barrel lug.

The 3-inch barrel uses the full length ejector rod, where the shrouded 2.5 does not. Prior to the advent of the 3-inch M13, I used to shoot with a DEA agent who had heavy barrel M10s cut to three inches, for full ejection stroke.

Actually, this gun came from CDNN, it was the last of the round butts they had. I like the idea of the 3 inch, but sounds like I'll just keep it and shoot, which is where I started when I got it, intending to use it as a beginning trainer for teaching new shooters with centerfire rounds.
