I have a Glock 19 that I got as my first handgun other than 22s

I use it for just about everything..hd, hunting sidearm, idpa, etc...but I dont particularly like it

I recently came a cross a 2.5in Smith model 19-4 nickel that I'm thinking about trading for

I like revolvers and have wanted a 357 for a while

would I be getting about the same level of use out of the smith
or in other words is the 2.5 too short to be of any use

The S&W you are thinking about is a good gun. I think for all around use, you would be better served with a 4 inch barrel. Something else you might want to think about is this. Right now you don't care for your Glock. That's okay, people either love them or hate them. There is no in-between. But that G19 is your first real gun. If you trade it off, in a few years you might be finding yourself waxing nostalgic for your first gun.

Unless you will carrying it concealed, a 4" .357 magnum is much easier to shoot well, even with .38 specials. Less recoil, less muzzle blast, longer sight radius.
You may also find that revolvers are not as pleasant to shoot as a Glock 19.
Used revolvers can be found pretty cheap, you might want to try one out before you let go of your Glock.

The short model 19 is such a neat revolver. Granted, the four inch version is generally more practical, but they are around in abundance. Not so the short gun. I'd buy it just because.

I really like my model 66-4 with a 2 1/2" barrel. But be advised your going to need some serious hearing protection when you touch one of these rascals off.

if you measure the cylinder and barrel of the M-19 together, you'll find that it is very close to that of the G19 total barrel length...in which also contains the cartridge.

the 2.5" M-19 is a great gun for everything and it's short sight radius will teach you alot about sight alignment

With your Glock you've got at least 15 rounds on tap before you need to reload at which time you push a button and then insert another mag, ready to go again.

With the Smith you shoot six times, push a button, swing the cylinder out to eject the spent cases, put six more in using either a speed loader or putting them in those tiny little holes one at a time, swing the cylinder shut and shoot six more times, then repeat.

If you reload the brass is easier to control than with the autoloader.

I have a Smith 66 in 2.5" flavor and when I go the range it's my autos that get the lions share of the shooting. My Smith is good, it's accurate and powerful and it does duty as one of my vehicle guns but for a pleasurable shooting session I stick with my 1911's. I like to make noise.

Having said all that and even though I don't like Glocks my reccomendation is to keep your Glock and add the Smith to your collection. Both are fine examples of their style but I suspect you will use them differently while enjoying both.

Did I mention that I don't like Glocks? :)

The heart wants what the heart wants.

In other words...
If you want a .357 magnum snubbie, then you're not going to be happy until you get one.

So I advise you to go ahead and make the trade and get the revolver.
Only then will you really know if that is what you truly want.

I do think that after you have made the trade and after you have shot the snubbie for a while, you will probably wish that you had your Glock 19 back.
Like the old saying goes...
"you don't know what you've got till it's gone".

The Glock 19 is one of the best pistols ever designed IMO.

Good luck,
Easy

Glocks are a dime a dozen, no offense to Glock owners, nickel plated 2 ½” model 19 are not. Go for the Smith, I don’t think you will regret it.

The 2.5" Model 19 (or 66) is one of the coolest-looking revolvers ever, but I would not replace a perfectly good Glock with it. Rather - if finances permitted - I would supplement the Glock. Objectively, however, the short barrel has some disadvantages - it doesn't have a full length ejector rod, the sight radius is short, and it exacerbates muzzle blast, especially with magnums. As well, it is not much easier to carry belt holstered than a three- or four-inch gun.

There is a place for the Glock and a place for the Smith. I would NEVER part with either one of them. Both are incredible in their own right. Get the 19, you'll love it (super versatile) and your 19 will always be there for you. Honestly, I believe if you sell a gun you don't absolutely hate, you'll buy another, meaning loss of $$$. I hated my first handgun and haven't regretted it, but it was a PITA. Only good thing was the fit. Glock will never let you down, just not going to be the belle of the ball. Ok, that's long enough of a post, now got that nickel plated beauty and leave the G19 at home!

my dad has an M&P9 already so the poly 9mm spot is still filled...i dont have a 357 tho

well im going to check out the smith in the AM...if its on good shape i will prob make the trade...i remember somewhere on this forum there was a check list of what to check when looking at a used revolver...can someone point me in the right direction?

I owned an carried a 2 1/2" 19-4 for 3 years. They are great revolvers. Bought mine from a retired detective.

I ended up selling it 2 years ago due to financial issues. I have regretted that decision ever since.

Buy it. You won't regret it.

If it absolutely a one or the other proposition, I'd choose the S+W over the Glock. If you decide you miss your Glock, you can save for another one or trade back into it or another one. The Glock is very easily replaced. (You will find many people, I think, who would trade you a Glock 19 for a nice, nickel, 2.5" S+W 19!)
When faced with these type of questions I usually figure the one to get rid of is the one that is easiest to replace. Nice S+W 2.5" 19's are getting harder to find and harder to buy ($$!!). I expect you'll be able to get yourself a new or used Glock 19 pretty easily for quite a long time. (Citing basic supply/availability reasons, not necessarily political/legal reasons for not being able to acquire one.)

Both are good. If it is an option, own both.
If this is not an option, try to shoot the S&W before foresaking the G19.

FWIW, I have owned both and own multiple S&W revolvers, and no longer own a Glock of any description.

However, the S&W revolvers are "winter" carry pistols only. I am just as likely to carry a steel 1911 as an S&W revolver during the winter.

Come Spring/Summer/Fall I will be carrying an alloy 1911 or a Kahr P45.

Get 'em both pikid89.

I have the M66, first model, pinned barrel, recessed chambers, zero zero tolerance (that is no end shake, no crane shake, locks like a bank vault....)

And I have the Glock 19 (actually to me the Glock 26 is more like the Smith 19, but that's just me.)

To me the Smith 19, in short form, is the sexiest gun ever and I admit I'm a fool for K frames cause I grew up on Colt "O" and Smith "K" frame hoglegs.

19 vs. 19

I second the get both scenario. You will always miss the Glock if you don't keep it. Until you shoot IDPA with the S&W 19 you will not fully appreciate the Glock 19. Then again as has been mentioned you just don't find S&W 19s in great shape very often. The S&W 19 is a classic and a wonderful handgun but please don't try to feed it a steady diet of full power magnum loads. The K frame of the 19 just will not handle it as well as the L frames will.

Be specific in the title! I got all excited and promptly clicked when I read "Model 19."

Thought you were talking about the Combat Magnum....

Trickster!

well we are talking about the combat magnum....lol i was gonna trade a Glock 19 for the S&W 19-4 but the guy sold it before i had a chance to trade it

I did a similar trade as you. Had a Glock 19, kinda liked it, but had a trade opportunity to get a S&W Mod. 66 (4 inch) and didn't think twice about it. A little different than your situation, but still.

Although my next handgun purchase will be another Glock 19/17. :)
I'd get both if you can, otherwise, I'd probably do the trade too.

Something I don't think has been mentioned here, that I've noticed is the utility factor of the Glock. I don't have a Model 19 Smith but do have a 10 and 65. They just beg for nice leather holsters and fancy wood grips. Your not going to crawl under a car to check for that strange noise, spray paint something, use a weed trimmer, etc. while wearing that nice rig. A Glock in a Kydex holster can be worn during all this with no real worries about it not cleaning up to original condition afterward. That said, I say get them both, then you have options.
