How much of a difficulty is it to have a 6 inch barrel replaced with a 2.5 inch? The gun in question is a model 19-5. Any ideas where to find a good barrel too?

Doing a barrel change is easily do-able.....for pistolsmiths with the correct tooling and knowledge to do it RIGHT.
You will have to be sure to get a barrel of the same vintage, since S&W has made some changes to the barrels over the years.
One way to get the right barrel, and get it installed PROPERLY, would be to send your gun in to S&W and let the experts do the job.
In the long run, this will usually cost less, and will have less aggravation with getting the wrong barrel, or a defective barrel, Etc.

The good folks at http://cylinder-slide.com have swapped barrels for me a time or two. They did good work. I didn't say they did cheap or fast work. I said they did good work.

Definately send it to S&W or a properly equiped smith.

IME for what you pay for a barrel and a quality installation you can probably buy another model 19 with a 2.5 inch barrel.
