It's now been awhile since I have had my model 57 smith and first .41 magnum. This gun has been my ccw piece and has been great as a constant companion. I took it to the range and it has been a tack driver through and through. I had wanted to ask if anyone here has tried the hogue extended cylinder release and if they have any problems with drawing from the holster?

I've never had any issues or complaint about any of the various releases on the factory Smith's.
But once upon a time I thought chamfering a cylinder was excessive, same with moonclips.

I currently have a 625 getting chamfered.

So I've been wrong before haha.

I don't think they're expensive. They're certainly not hard to install. Take it for a test drive, give us a review.

It's a matter of personal preference, so you'd just have to try the Hogue release to see how you like it.

FWIW, I don't care for it. It interferes a bit with my strong thumb position, and I have to actually reach back with my thumb to work it. And strangely, the serrations are vertical; seems to me they ought to be horizontal or checkered for max grippiness.

Another popular aftermarket/oversized release is California Competition Works' latch. Ergonomically, it worked better for me than the Hogue.

In the end, though, the factory design of the newer style release works best for me. My preference, then, is either to keep it stock or the SDM latch, which is very grippy.

I've not had an issue when drawing with either the Hogue or CAComp, but I'm using an OWB kydex holster. For concealed carry in close to your body, snagging might be a concern.
